Back in the 1980's I co-founded a respite day care center for low-income and single parents. The idea came from conversations with other single moms, where we talked about what we needed to succeed. Since the government wasn't providing it to us we provided it to each other. It was a wonderful experience. I'm ready to do something meaningful again, but this time for others. What I've learned is that each group that complaints about family court, domestic violence or child protective services says the same thing. There is a lack of due process in family court. Government employees run ransack over people's lives. One study showed that half the kids taken into protective care should never have been removed from their homes. There's also gender bias against men. Fathers are almost always shown as the aggressor in domestic violence ads in every form of media. Men are demonized for family violence, yet women abuse men at almost the same rate, initiating it most often. Mothers, not fathers are guilty of most child neglect, abuse and murder. Due to the Violence Against Women Act, services for abused fathers and their children and fathers with their abused children are virtually nonexistent. Fathers are getting an undeserved bad rap and it's leaving 40% of America's kids without fathers. Studies actually show parents with joint custody have less conflict, probably because they're forced to work things out. They also show children prefer joint custody. We need to pass a true Federal Family Rights Act for biological parents, as well as make all domestic violence laws and services gender-neutral. Women have a national commission. Men deserve one too. We need to affect the media with true facts about domestic violence and child abuse, and educate our politicians. I believe once we establish federal parental rights and take gender bias out of the courtroom, we'll see a reduction in protracted divorce and child custody cases. There will be fewer children in foster care, fewer parents losing everything they own, including their kids, and fewer kids losing their parents. Our society needs these changes as soon as possible. I'd like to use this money to make this happen. I recently found out I'm an INFP. That explains why I'm always trying to make the world a better place, and why I champion 'the little guy.'
