Small business development, fundraising, storytelling and gardening

I've been living in Brooklyn, NY for 20 years, but I grew up in a suburb nearby on Long Island. I'm definetly a "city boy" now even though I enjoy spending time in upstate NY with relatives. My educational background includes attending the very progressvie liberal arts school, Anticoh College in Ohio where I focused on political science and theater. I spent time working as a community organizer and as a VISTA (Volunteer in Service to America.) Later I went to the City University of N …view more w York and earned a Masters of Fine Arts in Performing Arts Management. With this degree I worked as a fundraiser for several non-profit cultrual orgnaizationns in New York City. Over the course of the 14 years working in the non-profit sector, I began to see how people with small businesses are driven to fulfill missions, too; they're just not always about social change. This inspired me to go back to school again and get an MBA with a focus on entrepreneurship. I then transformed my solo consutling practice from working exclusively with non-profits to also working with small businesses. Interestingly, I found that my work for both groups was about telling their story; in one case to prospective donors and in the other, to prospectie buyers. I never gave up my interst in theater and discoverd the art of storytelling after stints doing stand-up comedy. These two interests - storytelling and helping small businesses tell their business story, led me to the idea I am now presentting - Competitive Advantage: Stories With An Edge.
