Great idea! People would harvest more of there own trees/vegetables(zookienie) if they had people to give it to. The farmers and locals with fruit to sell make more money since they don't have to share profits with the stores and the locals get great fresh produce at a great price! I think your idea is too cumbersome and bureaucratic. I can't fathom, property owners allowing people on their property picking up fruit for free. You got to think of potential legal problems, whenever you start a business (getting hurt on private property). I know, after spending $250,000, out of pocket! You would also need many volunteers and way too much outside funding! If you want abundant and cheap food, go to a farmer's market right before they close, buy what they have real cheap, load it on a truck, then just give it away to the needy or food bank once a week. Its a simple win-win for everyone and you don't need a bunch of "hand-out" money and ton of no paid volunteers, and people begging for fruit from private landowners, etc!! I've never seen a public fruit tree in NYC of DC. This seems like a pain in the neck business to me. You'll never be as efficient as country farmers (who are having a tough time making money as it is) and if I was a retailer, I need to be able to count on my vendors to deliver product of consistent quality, consistently. This sounds like a charity not a business. If you know an urbanite who owns a fruit tree but doesn't want the fruit, then offer to pick the fruit and all the rotting, wasp infested fruit on the ground, and give the few good pieces of fruit to the homeless. And do it quickly, before the homeless accuse you of giving them substandard fruit, like they did with the muffins on that episode of Seinfeld.
