Mentorship/Fellowship Program for Determined College Drop...

Many young people experience a low-wage employment rut that artificially pressures them from continuing education or career advancement. Career advancement requires an impressive resume, and education requires time and money not available to low-wage individuals. Determined individuals, 18-25, need training, an inspirational career network and support.

This program will provide individuals with rigorous career workshops, a small stipend and mentorship. Educational emphasis will be placed upon public oration, writing and social change. Mentees will be expected to develop their career, or to work toward a full degree. Partnerships with major nonprofits & schools make this possible.

I would seriously advise you to clearly articulate how large this problem is. How many young people experience a low-wage employment rut? If you can identify a large issue and prove that the key problem is lack of support then you develop a firm value proposition for your idea. Also who will do the training and are they qualified? Are you going to develop a one-on-one mentorship relationship and how are you intending to build that network? I think you have a great idea but it seems vague to me on how you will execute your idea.

Q3 - What I often hear from employers is that they are looking for employees who are responsible, who can work in teams, that have good oral and written communication skills, and that can use technology. It is not the specific technical skills for the individual job that employers need as the employees can be trained in those skills while on the job, but the things like showing up for work on time and dressed appropriately, being able to write a letter or speak clearly, and being able to use basic computer programs.

I would also suggest teaching some professional selling skills because the students will really need to know how to sell themselves to employers and also because for many positions sales skills are a huge part of the job.

Q2 - Show them how to be strong again. The realities of the world dont change. There is fierce competition inside of tons pride-packs - ie - you need to be inside the circle to be at the top. These people know this - they feel it. But - everyone can compete and get somewhere at least. And with a little luck - they can do alot. Get them interested in self knowledge so that they know how to investigate what is stopping them.

Everyone's got different personalities which include different interests and passions. The interests and passions may not necessarily line up with feeding their soul - ie - they may be into activities that damage their strengths and not really know it because they don't know anything different. And then - all that needs to get lined up with providing an economic benefit for society. Together with the limitations of the resources available to the indual so that one can minimize risk. So all these things need to come in line.

1. What would a sustainable funding pipeline look like for this organization?
2. Given the unusual demographic of individuals we are targeting for career support and mentorship, how do we perform outreach?
3. Our program is focused on rigor: what career skills should we emphasize?
