Mashavu is a laptop-based system that enables children in the developing world to connect with doctors (anywhere) using existing cell-phone infrastructure. Mashavu stations in developing communities will collect essential medical data from each child on a regular basis using sensors. This information will be sent thru cell-phones to web servers. Doctors & health administrators will be able to log on to a web portal to supervise the health of kids they have “adopted”, provide medical feedback to the child's caregivers, and monitor regional health statistics. Mashavu also has potential for disaster situations due to its quick implementation.

*Mashavu is Swahili for "chubby-cheeked"

have a cup of coffee with a cellphone service provider, go thru the project with em. their social reponsibility will kick in. you might get a boost, use their existing infrastructure.. as mentioned, GPRS is the best option to get way in there..as rural areas dont have computers or electricity for that matter.

Juke, hope it works out.

I think the major question to ask here is if this is actually going to be helpful to providing medical care. As a pediatrician, I'm not really sure that a computer listing vital signs and weights would help me to care for patients in any meaningful way. It might, however, be useful in collecting demographic data for futher epidemiological studies. For example, simply keeping track of weight and height over a prolonged period of time and also documenting social phenomenon such as NGO food deliveries, vaccination efforts (and successes), violence, drought, etc, would be useful for larger public health measures. Documenting vaccination rates, access to actual care, type of home, etc, over time to track populations might me infinitely more useful than collecting vital signs on select chidren. --Rachel

Thanks for the advice! You are correct. We have looked at what Grameen Bank has done in addition to other initiatives for developing communities, such as kiva.org and Sente, one of the many SMS-based money-wiring services.

I'm sure you've done this already, but it may be interesting to look at the Grameen Bank as you try to determine a business model for local communities. I know that Grameen has been involved in many initiatives beyond microcredit and part of their approach has been to create financially sustainable local models. Interesting dilemma...good luck.

Michelle,

Very valid questions. Electricity is something we are absolutely considering while running this project. We are looking at cost effective solutions, such as solar or wind power. Last year another team from Penn State successfully helped a village in Kenya install a electricity generating windmill almost entirely built from local resources.

As far as internet...this solution actually bypasses the need for a dedicated internet connection. It uses GPRS data capabilities of cell phones to upload the data to the internet. A 2005 BBC study found that 97% of Tanzanians had cell phone access and almost all carriers offer GPRS data connectivity. The key to our design is that it is very low overhead, which keeps data costs down.

Thanks for your feedback!

I think in developing communities, the challenge of infrastructure will be a huge one.

You have computers, but do you have electricity to run them, do you have internet, do you have technical support. You will need to think through those in order to be able to offer these types of resources.

Good luck!
