start a community garden farm
start a community garden farm
Idea Description
Rent garden plots for people who like to garden but can't because they live in an apartment or condo. Each plot would be 20'x20' and the renter would be able to plant any "legal" flowers or vegetables they wanted. There would be pathways between the plots, a community well for watering and tool shed. The gardener would be able to plant annuals or if they choose to reserve a plot long term - perennials too. This would also be a place where gardening clubs could meet but not used to sell things like a farmers market or produce stand.
What will you do if you win $10,000 for this idea?
re-zoning for the commercial use of agricultural land and prep work for dividing plots and creating a driveway/parking area. Also, an outdoor well pump would need to be installed.

Interesting start - which city and where in the city? Do you have a plot or plots of land picked out already? I'd like to see some more specifics here. Also, 20x20 is a big plot for a single gardener, and while I'm sure some people might like it, others might appreciate a smaller plot, even down to a window-box sized area where they could put a few flowers. Not all of us have the time or money to rent a plot that large. Make the plot sizes variable. People like choice, and you might get more interest from the on-the-fence crowd who can't commit to a large garden.
I actually live in the country - 10minutes to the nearest town. 20 minutes to 2 large cities via the highway. The area I have available is 27 acres of which about 10 acres are wooded. I was thinking of starting in the front open area and then work my way back as demand increased. Maybe even some partially wooded spots for adventurous gardeners that want woodland/shade plants. Cutting the plot sizes down would be easy to accommodate. Maybe a set size/price and the let people customize smaller or larger and have the price pro-rate as the size changes and advertise a few of the size variations/prices. Nevertheless, because the renter would have to drive out of town to reach the garden, the garden plot needs to be large enough to make it worth the drive.
