Create a nationwide institute where non-profit and educational organizations can access free new media training and low cost creative services.
Idea Description
The idea would be to institute a nationwide program, in itself a non-profit organization, that provides creative services for small non-profits, such as churches, educational institutions, NGO's, etc. Managed by a staff member(s) at each local level. Local staff would complete paid design work and conduct free regular training for students covering topics such as basic web design, blogging, audio, video, Internet protocol and pitfalls, etc. Paid project work would be offered at reduced prices only to smaller non-profit groups.
What will you do if you win $10,000 for this idea?
Set-up the first local center: complete the non-profit status, purchase equipment (computers, software, audio/video) and a coffee pot to stay awake through those first, long days.
Vote for it now.
Would be useful in third world countries alrroohu
There are many organizations out there already that specialize in providing creative services to nonprofits; google "nonprofit website design" or "nonprofit graphic design", for example. They were created by the free market in response to a perceived need. How would adding a layer of nationwide bureaucracy help the nonprofit connect with the creative service at the local level and add something that the wide variety of existing service can't or don't provide?
In theory it sounds good but I have to agree with the earlier poster. It just seems like another layer of bureaucracy. Have you seen Paul Hawkens website: www.wiserearth.org this is an amazing place where non-profits can network and perhaps find the help that they need.
Thanks for the comments. Allow me to respond to these and answer the questions posed. I googled "nonprofit website design" and the first 6 that came up were for-profit business that only targeted non-profits as part of their overall marketing strategy. One company was offering basic web hosting for $15/month. Surely if these companies were really dedicated to providing non-profits with a viable service they would point them to the likes of GoDaddy with $4 hosting. The other issue is that these companies are not going to provide free training - where's the money in that? WiserEarth is more of a resource. They don't provide the service we are proposing. The crux of this idea is to allow smaller non-profits, etc. access to quality web/media design services for minimum cost. …more The fact it is itself a non-profit means that the focus would not be profit, but results. Training of students is also key. Our children are growing up in a highly technical world and the education system us not keeping up. They may be using computers in school, but they are not taught the basic skills and protocols of Internet use. Think of it as a D.A.R.E. program for the web!
As someone who works in the non-profit world, this idea would be extremely beneficial to not only start-up non-profits, but also established non-profits who want to be as effective as their "for profit" counterpart.
