Rebuilding homes in Peru
Rebuilding homes in Peru
Idea Description
Since Peru suffered a major earthquake on August 15, 2007 over 1,000 people died and 20,000 people have lost their homes. As an American working in the non-profit sector I have contributed directly to the relief efforts, but am now saddened to see people rebuilding their homes with shabby materials that will lead to problems in the future.
Working with an existing NGO, I plan to assist poor homeowners by providing earthquake reinforced building materials and technical advice. We will use volunteer help from Peruvian engineers to certify that each house is earthquake resistant.
What will you do if you win $10,000 for this idea?
1. Discuss potential local hardware suppliers that would be interested in partnering with us on this project. As of right now, these building materials are only available in the capital of Lima, so it will be important to bring these materials to market in the earthquake affected region.
2. Develop screening process to decide who will qualify for assistance. We already have a few people in mind. See some of the potential people you might help here: http://www.directaidperu.org/latest_news
Vote for it now.

Q1: I may need help with someone that is a bit more experienced with HTML/PHP programming if anyone would like to volunteer their time!
Great Idea. Lots of families will be getting 6,000 usd from the government as a rebuilding subsidy. Needless to say that is nowhere near enough. So they will use as little of the money as possible and rebuild as cheap as possible until the next quake destroys everything again. At Direct Aid Peru, we have started the construction phase of our effort and are in the pre-construction phase of a 10,000 square foot multi-purpose shelter/community center for the poorest section of the town of San Clemente, Pisco. Fundraising will be our challenge. Any idreas and contributions are welcome. Tks www.directaidperu.org. Mauricio@directaidperu.org.
