Idea Description

My first husband died of cancer at thirty and I started a nonprofit for young adult cancer patients that sends patients and caregivers/families on week-long respites. He felt alone during his treatment and realized that there were little services for young people with cancer. We’ve helped 650 families since his death – all returning home rejuvenated, but monthly we turn away 40 patients because of geographic and age limits. We have limited resources for houses. We use donated homes and own a home in Florida. My dream is to expand into a national nonprofit to help more young patients.

What will you do if you win $10,000 for this idea?

I would start to build a national program and use the $10,000 towards the purchase of another home near Orlando, Florida. This would allow us to extend our program to more patients in other areas of the country wanting to see their caregivers and kids smile – and get a break from cancer – bringing some joy to a family in turmoil.
