Outdoor Survival Skills applied to everyday life
Survival skills are essential when in nature for extended periods but they can also be very helpful in everyday life. My classes would not only teach people basic survival skills, but also how this knowledge can make their lives safer and better.

Q1: Is this something people would want?
(7 pieces of advice)
11.24.08 | 08:29 AMThere is a market for these types of classes. Take my brother for example. When he was younger he attended a camp which taught him some of these skills and he loved it. I assume some local camps would also be receptive to having you teach a few classes to their kids.

11.19.08 | 08:20 PMI don't know how much of a market there is for this. This might be a niche that you will have to work hard to reach. I think it might be something that outdoor enthusiasts would be interested in, people going on expedition type trips and groups of Scouts maybe.

11.18.08 | 11:48 PMI would start researching practical skills that you believe people could use in an uncomfortable situation as well as a life or death situation. Some of the same materials like hiking essentials, common pocket items, or the common elements of nature that could be used in these types of situations would be good for the customer to know.
However just in case your still wondering here are a couple of sites that might be able to help

These are all different subject and items covering from a simple camping trip to a natural disaster. Hope this gives you some indication as to what could be used for your items list.

by colbron111.18.08 | 04:25 PMI think that it would be cool to advertise your site, should you choose to make it, and have people visit and watch you teach them how to do neat things like I described earlier. If it was intriguing enough, and if you are in fact an expert, you might even be able to eventually get a tv show out of it. But that is a whole other venture.
But as far as getting people to attend your classes, I think that you might have more luck with the college crowd, especially if you are going to teach how to handle the more extreme situations.
You might want to get in contact with these guys to see how you can get plugged into local campuses:

Watching it several times bring willpower, and ability to face any critical situation & training for 1month or a bit more would make them say never give up in life

Q2: What type of everyday scenarios could I use to demonstrate certain skills?
(5 pieces of advice)
11.19.08 | 08:15 PMCar problems, small repairs without out conventional tools available, lock outs, power outages, people losing heat.... really any problem that we encounter that could leave us anywhere from uncomfortable to in danger.

11.18.08 | 09:45 PMWell I would start with ones that people would most likely be facing if they were going into the woods, on a hike, skiing, or some other common recreational activities. After going through some possible scenarios on what could happen and what to do when faced in this kind of situation then you could start expanding your bases for scenarios and survival.
One idea might be to check what other survivior type instructional programs are doing. This could be industry specific or could be dealing with popular cultural, the main thing is you are finding out issues and situations that will benefit the user as a whole.
Some different sources might include
tv programs
state park national park survivor tips
animal contact and survival tips
extreme weather
extreme conditions
it really all depends on what you think your target consumer will benefit and be interested in learning about.
One branding idea out of this is you could start building and designing pamphlets and handouts that customers and state parks could either buy or pick up. This would be…more a great marketing vehicle for your services.
Another market might be kids. Speaking at schools or youth functions could provide a way to teach children as well as get their parents involved in some classes.

by colbron111.18.08 | 04:09 PMWell I would leave that up to the expert, who I thought was you....
But I would think that simple things like how to react to someone who is choking, or what to do if you are choking and you don't have any help. Though it sounds simple, if you have ever chocked or partially choked on something before, you know how scary it can be. And people do actually die from it, not just babies.
But I think that you could teach people how to handle some crazy scenarios out of the "Worst Case Scenarios Survival Handbook."

Q3: Should I do only classes or also do videos on a website?
(6 pieces of advice)
by snowrider247
11.20.08 | 12:47 PMYou should do both classes and videos. Like others have said the videos would allow your customers to refresh their memory. You could also have refresher classes as well.
Are you sure you want to report as abuse?
11.19.08 | 08:13 PMYou should do both so that people that take the class can reference back to the videos to refresh their memory. There is nothing like being able to ask questions though, so you should have their first experience be a class.

11.18.08 | 09:36 PMSounds intense. Where exactly would you want to teach these classes? A local gym, a park or wilderness center, or would you go on location. With everything being online these days your idea has alot of options that you can choose from. For instance, tomorrow you could drive to a park, pick a location within that park, and talk about some different survival situations you could encounter out in the woods. Then on the same day load it up onto youtube or your website for the whole world to watch.
This presents alot of different opportunities for an idea such as your however they all have different pros and cons. It will ultimately depend on your budget and your time. You decide.
however if it was me there are already enough survival shows out there on tv like http://dsc.discovery.com/fansites/manvswild/manvswild.html and http://www.survivorman.ca/. If you really wanted wanted to be original I would suggest doing a more hands on approach with your community and neighbors and seeing what kind of reaction you get. Who knows, the discovery channel just might come to you next

by colbron111.18.08 | 04:04 PMI think that face to face, personal instruction is always better than watching a video. This way the students can ask questions as well as really seeing how you are doing what you are showing them from their personal point of view. But I will also say that having videos online gives you the opportunity to speak out and teach to a larger audience.
Here is a website that might help you in your development of your video website, should you choose to go that route:

What advice do you have to help me grow my idea?
(4 pieces of advice)by ripley117
11.19.08 | 12:10 AMSome other things to think about will be mainly your website which I know I touched on very lightly on some of my previous postings.
Like any webpage out there you want it to be easy for the user to use as well as represent your idea fully. There are others, if you want to check them out and find out some different elements for what makes a good web site, just check out this link:
http://www.websitepublisher.net/successful_website/
http://schmidt.devlib.org/creating-a-successful-website.html
http://www.startupnation.com/steps/66/create-successful-website.htm
these all have a little bit something different.
Another aspect to start thinking about is how your going to reach your customer. Some popular methods include email marketing, search engine, search optimization, pay-per-click, etc. The best thing to do is figure out how much money you actually have and want to spend. But again, this is a local marketing effort so things might work a little bit differently.
this might help:

11.18.08 | 09:03 PMYou may want to offer different classes. Some of outdoor survival and some for disaster survival. You should research situations that people commonly find themselves in and react wrong too and focus on these. Also maybe survey people as to what some situations that they fear being caught in are. This way you could tailor your classes to things that lot's of people are afraid of.

by mf6611.17.08 | 11:10 PMLook at places like deep underwater discovery which takes a very long time which may require deep sea diving or focusing on firefighters as in the movie Backdraft and making documentaries on all sorts including the previous ideas as well as not sticking only to the idea of mountaineering would definitely help the business grow and attract more customers as most people have different likings which they want to switch on very often and thus understand and gain comfortable to dealing with. This would add a further high sense of quality to your business.
Are you sure you want to report as abuse?
11.17.08 | 10:15 PMI think that your target market is very specific. I don't think you'll be able to market this successfully to a broad array of people. However, I think that those who do enjoy camping, hiking, backpacking, etc., would be enthusiastic about learning outdoor survival skills. If you only offer classes, you are limiting yourself to one kind of terrain of which to teach, and only a small amount of people to teach. If instead of doing the classes, and focused purely on videos, you could become more specialized, and create videos that target certain people in certain areas. Here's what I mean: let's say you've got a group of backpackers that have enjoyed the sport for a year or two, and are really getting into it, so they decide the hike the Appalachian Trail. If you were to offer videos that deal specifically with the dangers the group will face on the Appalachian Trail, they would be sure to take notice. Similarly, if some people wanted to venture into the Rockies, you could have a video dealing with the specific things they may encounter. This way, you are not limited to one kind…more of terrain or one kind of adventurer!

Idea Description
My classes would teach participants survival skills for a variety of situations from being stranded in a remote area to urban crises to basic everyday situations. Outdoor survival requires increased awareness which can be a great skill to identify and avoid unsafe situations.
What will you do if you win $10,000 for this idea?
I would establish the company and begin marketing to find customers. I would also use some of the money to hire a second survival expert to handle more clients.
Vote for it now.

I like your idea; I want to improve your odds of getting funding I will vote for your idea if you will vote for mine. My idea is for a web site that raises money for inventors and entrepreneurs called New Idea website Check out my idea blob submission and visit New Idea Website and see what I can do for you. http://www.ideablob.com/ideas/4060-NEW-IDEA-WEBSITE The need for jobs is one of the biggest problems that a democratic government faces because creating jobs is an unwanted byproduct of business and industry. The reason I say its unwanted is the more jobs a business creates the more its expenses are and the smaller it’s bottom-line. If business and industry have their way they would run their companies with no jobs at all no management or labor. To deal with this dilemma I pr…moreopose a federal venture capital carrot fund that literally pays entrepreneurs to create jobs. The investment bank would be expected invest in seed level startup projects like yours and to lose money at a specified dollar per jobs ratio for example during hard times that figure may be as high as $20,000 per job and good times the figure may be as low as five dollars per job, by controlling this ratio the fed could roughly control unemployment. The bank will be expected to fund novel products and services and stay away from things like restaurants that will simply draw jobs from other restaurants or moving factories from one part of the country to another. If you like this idea vote for it and send the congressional letter from the website. Sincerely Frank Scruggs
