Hands-On: Promoting Sewing Through Ticche & Bea

Ticche & Bea is a small craft kit manufacturer located in Chicago--it's our mission to teach the world to sew, value the past, and connect generations. Our kits allow customers to "upcycle" their t-shirts or baby clothes into quilts, and learn to value the art of working with your hands.

Idea Description

Having been a teacher for thirteen years, I started to notice the "fall-out" of people who never had a home ec class. At Ticche & Bea, www.ticcheandbea.com, we value technology, and of course all the three r's of education, but there is a gap of people who simply don't know how to work with their hands. Learning to sew slows the world down a bit--it allows you to focus, to let troubles fall away, and it serves as an outlet for creativity. What for our grandmothers was a major part of life is now becoming an endangered art. Our purpose at Ticche & Bea is to encourage creativity, help others develop fine motor skills, and preserve the past.

What will you do if you win $10,000 for this idea?

We're currently at an impasse-- we're selling our kits through major retailers like www.uncommongoods.com, and through a few small distributorships. We have large sales numbers, but anyone who's ever had a business will tell you-- it takes money to make sales. We've seen incredible wholesale growth, but we don't always have enough money to make the products. This may sound like a good problem to have, but it's actually more stressful than not having any sales. If we won the 10K, here's what we would do:

1. $4,000--purchase materials
2. $4,000--advertising
3. $2,000-- create sewing workshops & parties. This is the next step in the evolution of Ticche & Bea.
