Idea Description
The "simple to use" and "free to use" website has offers, discounts and freebies that are only good within 15 days +/- from your birthday. The offers are found simply by entering you Zip Code and the radius of miles that you are willing to go. Then a list of offers, discounts and freebies can be printed and then clipped. When you redeemed the coupon, you must also present "proof of birthday" to the vendor. Offers can include, passes to sporting events, free food, discounts at stores, restaurants and anything of any value. This website would solicit companies in the US and Canada to participate for a nominal yearly subscription based on amount of offers. Local biz will pay a small fee.

Q1: How many times did you have an uneventful birthday?
I like this idea even though there seem to be several websites out there with a similar business model I.e. Freemania.net, Anycoupons.com etc. I have also seen clothing manufacturers or ice cream vendors send coupons in the mail around the time of one’s birthday with intentions to entice the individual to spend money on the birthday. However, there doesn’t seem to be a specific “one stop shop” website that allows an individual to take advantage of these special promotions during a birthday so I think you fill an opportunity gap. I have a few recommendations to consider as you build out this idea. The first is to strongly research the feasibility of companies offering “significant” discounts or even freebies. In my own personal experience, receiving a 10% or even 20% off co…moreupon at a clothing store was not enough to get me to go there. If I received a 50% discount at a major clothing retailer or electronics outlet, this would certainly cause me go to the store. You might be able to arrange an Overstock.com relationship where companies that are looking to get rid of inventory could offer sizable discounts or even freebies in order to get customers to visit their store and potentially purchase additional products at regular cost. It might be worthwhile to see who Overstock’s strategic partners are and contact them to see if you could setup the birthday coupons. Restaurants also hold significant potential since a lot of people tend to dine out on or near their birthday. By seeing if restaurants will offer a free meal coupon, the receiver gets the benefit of the free meal and the restaurant benefits by increased traffic and service to whomever accompanies the birthday girl/guy. One area of caution though is certainly the validation of identity. With so many security risks on the internet, many people may think the risk outweighs the rewards by sharing personal information over the internet. Validating in person is one way of getting around this because most people are willing to show a driver’s license or other form of identification. Therefore, there’s somewhat of a tradeoff here because online discounts would provide the convenience of shopping from one’s home and potential for a transaction whereas if someone has to go to a store, the probability of them driving across town begins to lessen. This is precisely why I think you need to examine whether vendors would offer significant discounts or even free products in order to cause someone to get in their car and drive to the store. I think you’re on the right path with the ability to determine how far one would be willing to drive though. I’m wondering whether there could be value in negotiating with companies to enhance the offer based upon a mileage limit. For example, if the store was more than 30 miles away, perhaps the offer would be a free widget instead of if the store was 15 miles away and the widget was 50% off. This might be attractive to a store to increase customer traffic. These are just a few thoughts to help get the creative juices flowing. The one stop shop is an attractive place for people to examine what benefits they could get, but generating the supplier relationships and business model will require consideration of the aforementioned comments.
