A laptop without any moving part (light-weight, lower consumption, longer lifetime)
Idea Description
Since I've got more and more online content, less and less local content, I don't need terabytes on my laptop.
Free me from hard drives and fans ! I want a really mobile laptop, not a one that needs power supply every 2 hours in the best case.
In addition, it could then be really light.
Last but not least : a less consuming laptop would be environment-friendly !
What will you do if you win $10,000 for this idea?

Sounds like the future is just around the corner.
We don't live in the same world. :-) Any laptop I can buy today has got a hard drive and a fan... and in the best case a 2-hours-long autonomy.
Sony launched a solid state laptop fairly recently. Admittedly the price is extortionate but still it might be a good benchmark! http://gizmodo.com/gadgets/while-they.re-hot/****-sony-vaio-tz90-solid+state-laptop-now-shipping-262189.php
Thank you Jamesosb ! In fact I would do the same but cheaper than a standard laptop : I don't need the best-of-breed processor nor RAM. Main idea is : Internet mobile access point with some safety storage.
or without... (a USB key is so cheap nowadays)
I am new to this site and have just started looking around, so please excuse my Newbie thoughts, as I get acquainted. Technically, you are not looking for a very sophisticated laptop; it appears that battery life and weight are the most important factors. Using a basic design, say similar to the one being promoted by One Laptop Per Child. http://www.olpc.com/ , adding a light weight solar array to the top of the case that trickle charges the onboard battery – also light weight, since there is solar in the mix to recharge the unit, and connecting to the internet with an online resource similar to GoToMyPC with all of your information securely stored on the encrypted web servers would suffice. Also, since a number of municipalities are building out wi-fi for no-low cost, this sho…moreuld be a fairly easy build with a pretty good ROI from the onset, and Cellular Data is almost ubiquitous around the world, connectivity to the Net should not be an issue.
Thank you very much mahill510 for your comment ! This is exactly the way I'm thinking ! Lightweight, not very sophisticated, with a more powerful battery than what we know today. Maybe we could work together if my idea comes to the project step... :-)
They already have stuff like this, look up the oqo computer, it doesn't have a hardrive, but uses solid state and runs a full windows OS
Babel, I'm more and more thinking that you're right : not a week without such announcement now. :-)
this is a matter of solid state drive technology getting cheap enough to offer to the masses. Most major PC vendors have solid state drive models announcing this year, but 60G or so of solid state memory is still very expensive! But, I believe this will be the norm in a couple years... no more spindles in computers.
