Q1: WHERE? Where in the Nashville area do you park a Pregnancy/Parenting community center? East Nashville? South Nashville? What are the chief concerns? Safety of the neighborhood? Ability to walk there? A diverse neighborhood? Central to several parts of Nashville? Anyone who lives in or knows Nashville want to chime in?
(2 pieces of advice)
10.25.08 | 11:02 PMNeeds to be in Nashville proper, in one of the neighborhoods near downtown, eastside or belmont? East would give you the greatest socio-economic range.

by wiiildfire10.23.08 | 03:12 PMI think a lot of people would feel unsafe bringing their small children to East Nashville, though it would be great to have some sort of outreach/branch located in the neighborhood for those who live there.
Green Hills? Belle Mead? Downtown or West End would probably be great so it's central to everyone, but most expensive. Are you sure you want to report as abuse?

We started one years ago and have now added a monthly e-newsletter to our quarterly paper one. We get very positive feedback on both and it really helps grow our support groups and classes. we're at www.bloomingtonbirth.org contact me if you want! I'm excited for you!!! this is great!

by PIMINC10.06.08 | 01:04 PMYou could hold a scheduled baby gym where parents can exercise with their babies/toddlers. The babies strengthen their bodies through exercise, learn body parts and ost of all, it is one of the ways to promote and achieve parent & child bonding.

09.02.08 | 03:35 PMI just attended a sign language class at our local parenting center. I thought that was pretty fun and the little guy has already picked up the "milk" sign pretty nicely. I wish you a lot of luck.
Are you sure you want to report as abuse?
by StaceyG08.31.08 | 02:04 PMInfant CPR is very important. What about newborn care also. You can keep ppl coming back by offering a story time for infants and toddlers. This will keep ppl interested for awhile longer. Maybe a class for parents or toddlers on ways to engage their babies bc these ppl always want to get a head start on teaching- so elp them with the simple things that are great for babies- rather than educational DVDs, let the parents play with them, help them learn and understand their role as parents of toddlers.

What advice do you have to help me grow my idea?
(12 pieces of advice)by mamajones10.26.08 | 09:42 AMIsis maternity is AMAZING. I have looked at so many of these places online and I wish I could go on a national tour and look at them or go work at several for a month just to learn! So glad parents are getting support in major cities. I just have a dream of doing it in Nashville too!

by jaelma10.09.08 | 09:08 PMPlease be sure to include some education for young women! It seems many of our very young women are not being educated in the art of taking care of themselves. I see far to many women under 20 yrs of age struggling alone with multiple babies. I feel it would be great to have some group sessions that allow dialogue to begin between the generations. I think your idea is wonderful and I am so happy to see how much your company has grown!!
peace and blessings

by Storm10.03.08 | 10:44 AMAnother bit of food for thought is that you might want to seek close/cordial relationships with the OB/GYNs that you will be working with most often. It is useful for you both to understand each other's roles and responsibilities.

by Storm10.03.08 | 10:42 AMAs a Dad-to-be in a few months I find myself at a loss for sources of information and support for fathers. I agree that the focus should be on mothers but think that an opportunity is being lost in not catering to dads and what they might be struggling with. It may be a little difficult for most guys to truly feel comfortable and learn under conditions that are geared towards the mom to be. Just a thought.

by mamajones09.19.08 | 03:08 AMActually, I have a great relationship with all the midwives in the area. We have complementary services not competing ones. We as doulas don't catch babies, just support women as they birth them.
Midwives are actually pretty friendly people, most of them! :)
Thanks for the advice!

by dmalby09.19.08 | 12:52 AMGreat idea. It seems that you have a direction on this idea. My advice would be for you to find a trustworthy attorney. There might be legal issues when you start stepping on the toes of State Licensed professionals such as Midwives.

What will you do if you win $10,000 for this idea?
From being an home-based, one woman show to developing a small service inside of a pediatric office, we are tired but excited by our progress. The extra money would help us make that next step in growth including expanding our hours of service and increasing our physical facilities space. We could then offer group classes for mothers/parents and at a variety of times to better serve our clients’ complex schedules. Further, with a bit of success under our belt, we are beginning to entertain investor options. Bringing more money to the table allows us to maintain control and the vision for our service.

My doula helped me avoid an epidural in an induced labor, and I'll always be thankful for her presence! I just attended my first birth as a support person and I think I've found my passion! I love your business and hope you win! And I wish we had something similar where I live! Good luck!
I signed up to vote for you but I guess I am a day late! Best wishes on your really really wonderful business venture! Oh, I didn't catch this so I'll have to re-read your business info, but are you planning on working with CPMs also? I'm a homebirthing mama!
Hi! I'm a Christian unschooling mom/birth doula/ author. I am more than happy to vote for you and hope you win!
Wonderful. I hope you win.
Doulas do amazing work, they help women AND their partners with so much, education, support and resources. We need more!
I would love to see this project win so that more families get the information and support they need to succeed! Breastfeeding in particular benefits not only babies but their mothers and society with improved health for baby and mother, fewer lost work hours, lower health insurance costs, and less environmental impact. Ms. Jones has already done a lot for the promotion of breastfeeding and she is an excellent candidate to help families get accurate information and helpful support about pregnancy, childbirth, breastfeeding and parenting!
I really like this idea. I have seen the trouble a friend went through. In fact, do consider adding one thing - how to combat post-delivery depression. It becomes very difficult, as a working woman to adjust to the new lifestyle of caring for the child. I kept hearing from her that its all about waking up with her son, feeding him, putting him to sleep, feedling, sleeping, etc. And she wasn't able to move much the first month after her delivery. So, there are requriements from new mothers that are both physical and mental in nature. And alas, even with they have the support of a male, the men don't always understand the emotional swings she goes through. One simple reason - his routine has hardly changed that first one or two months! Great idea!
Since many women do not have the support of a male, it is a good idea that you guys offer help to them. I know there are many other programs that help women to finish a short career or for those who have not gotten their high school diploma but I believe (and I don't know if you incorporate this in your program) that it would be a great idea to incorporate such think into your program. If the resources are not available to have such thing maybe getting in contact with some organizations that already do it would be a good idea. Maybe there can be a program incorporated into yours where moms can be able to obtain a degree.
La Leche League has really gotten behind some ideas on here. Your parenting center seems ripe for their support.
