Idea Description

The concept here is not merely computer recycling but reuse of old systems. Work with small businesses and technology providers to develop a system where a person brings in a computer system for recycling and is given a special voucher for new equipment at discount. The computer is then tested, repaired if needed and then loaded with Open Source Operating System (i.e.Linux) and other functional software. This is then listed on a special website provided by Advanta and available at a local depot for in-need high risk families at no cost. These systems can also be used to equip internet-cafes for the homeless.

What will you do if you win $10,000 for this idea?

Develop program details and support from civic groups that are aware of at risk and in-need families. Determine volunteer resources for help in training and redistribution of systems. Contact local groups to gain support for the program. Design partnerships with technology providers such as CISCO and others that offer similar programs to non-profits. Set up first operational computer depot with Internet cafe and training rooms for the re-introduction of the computer and admin staff and offices for the program.
