  That is true, but at the same time, you need to see the light at the end of the tunnel. If you aren't working towards a goal, or even know if it is even possible to make money with facebook applications, I would stop and research until you figure out what you need to do to make money. This will help you be more efficient with your time and resources when when working on this project.
  
  I have found a few different articles online talking about how to make money on facebook applications that I believe will answer your question and be very helpful to you. It looks like you can in fact make money from these applications, but you have to do it right.

  Q2: What do you think of this marketing plan? I believe this application has potential to spread virally, as students add it, they will invite their collaborators. Each person that uses the app will automatically make an announcement on facebook. To start the spread, I have access to a large local university. I could post fliers throughout the campus to get it out there initially. (1 pieces of advice)

  First of all, I think you need to explain the benefits of students working on this project first before you advertise it to them. I understand this application to be one that students can go and post their helpful research on an idea that was originally posted for a business' product line or a service that they are thinking about releasing to the public. If this is correct, then how and why would students want to do free research for these ideas? Maybe if you built in an incentive into the application, that would make it more attractive to students. Especially since they are already swamped with homework and studying for tests.
  You could possibly throw in gift cards to places like Pizza Hut www.pizzahut.com or starbucks www.starbucks.com
  I would think that students would be more likely to help if they new they could get a meal or two out of it.
