Reference Repository for Student to Student Collaboration
I'd like to build a facebook application that allows students to collaborate on the research phase for a project. Students with the app will be able to create a project, invite their friends, and add references to the project. The goal--quick and easily collaboration on the research phase.
Idea Description
Problem Statement: how to help students collaborate more effectively?
Solution: when I was a researcher, I used to print out every paper I read and write on it. When I would leave a project continuity was usually in the form of a stack of papers. Not a very efficient means to communicate or leave continuity. My solution is a repository that lets collaborators tag papers, summarize them, and comment on them on a project basis. As a novelty, the referenced item will be viewable in the application (thanks to ScribD)
What will you do if you win $10,000 for this idea?
Dear Ideablob, I keep vetting a lot of ideas before you. I really appreciate the feedback I'm receiving. I'm working to find what idea solves a problem for many of you. I will use the $10K to fund the development of the application.
Vote for it now.

Q1: How to monetize this? The general rule I keep seeing with web startups is build something people want, figure out how to monetize it later. Advertising is one option. I could also use this app as a testbed for building a more comprehensive suite of tools targeted at business collaboration environments.
That is true, but at the same time, you need to see the light at the end of the tunnel. If you aren't working towards a goal, or even know if it is even possible to make money with facebook applications, I would stop and research until you figure out what you need to do to make money. This will help you be more efficient with your time and resources when when working on this project.
I have found a few different articles online talking about how to make money on facebook applications that I believe will answer your question and be very helpful to you. It looks like you can in fact make money from these applications, but you have to do it right.
