  it depends on how the site is structured...as long as the banners are unobtrusive it should be alright

  I think an advertisement banner structure found on Facebook would be nice. They're easy to see but they don't distract from the content at hand.
  
  To be honest, a Facebook-esque networking system would be interesting if focused solely on the community. We've lost a lot socializing within the local community as people become more turtle-necked into their own homes. I don't know what happened to the word "community". It seems that people just don't want to interact with one another anymore. I'm really interested in this idea; college benefits a tremendous amount from social networks like Facebook and MySpace. Communities should too. This is certainly in the right direction.

  I like the idea for reviewing or ranking local businesses - I would see this functioning in two ways
  
  - a user could post a question to their 'neighborhood' requesting feedback on specific businesses
  
  OR
  
  -a user could create an unsolicited review/ranking about a business that would then be displayed in the 'neighborhood' view

  This would be great for schools! I could see a tutoring program or a school group organization service offered as part of the community program. A live interactive session involving multiple users, webcam, and voicechat systems would complement well with the service.

  I like the tutoring program idea - What do you think about having the local school/org sponsor the program. They could then assign qualified tutors (either teachers or other students) that would then be allowed to 'oversee' a tutoring session. The system should allow them to schedule and manage logistics for physical meets as well as online interactive sessions

  Exactly! That's what I had in mind too. Most students aren't able to get the tutoring they need because of time or logistical constraints; tailoring an online system to tutoring would be an immense aid to students unable to receive the help they need. As a student, it's very difficult for me to help other students because it usually takes a large portion of my time and their time just to travel to a specific location. Online interactive tutoring would be a wonderful aid as part of the community network.
