Seismic Border Security
Politics aside, the best way to cover large swaths of undeveloped land would be to place seismic probes in a grid, finely tuned these probes can work together triangulating any activity and sending the info to a central location. These probes would pick up any trucks, tunnel activity, etc.

Idea Description
Current border security is based on visual confirmation, which is like looking for a needle in a haystack. A Seismic grid which in an area where nothing is larger than a coyote, humans, cars and especially tunnel activity could be easily monitored. Triangulating the info, producing GPS coordinates which could be sent to drones for visual confirmation would simple let us see through the hay. Again politics aside people die out there, if someone is being tracked and it stops for a certain amount of time in a poor location they could be helped. Drug smuggling would also be curtailed. These probes are relatively cheap, highly sensitive, they could be hidden or buried. Work in deserts and forests

Buy enough probes to build a multi-acre test field to prove the concept, desert acres are pretty cheap as well.
