Harvey Milk Gay History Preservation and Art Project
The Harvey Milk Gay History Preservation and Art Project seeks to provide a dedicated space and funding for a gallery of history related to gay-rights pioneer Harvey Milk as well as gallery space for local artists from the gay community.
Idea Description
Harvey Milk, the nation's first open-gay elected official was and integral force in gaining national exposure for the gay-rights movement in the US. After his assassination in the 70's, his historic contribution to the gay community was slowly lost as it was never successfully passed on to the next generation of due to the AIDS epidemic of the 80's.
I currently own and operate a retail business in the site of Harvey Milk's old home and biz HQ in San Francisco. Until recently, efforts at historical preservation here have been stymied due to lack of funds. Our goal is to promote the cultural significance of the site and continue the tradition of promoting GLBT talent through art and design.
What will you do if you win $10,000 for this idea?
Our goal is to acquire more building space within our building for dedicated display of artifacts and historical documentation of both Harvey Milk and of the San Francisco Castro district. We already regularly feature and promote local GLBT artists and designers in our store and hope to have a more formal and regular space for properly showing their work as well. The $10K will help fund the acquisition of more art space as well as for acquiring artifacts from private collections to have on permanent display for the thousands of GLBT visitors to the store each year. It will also help in funding marketing efforts to help create awareness of the historical importance of the space.

Q1: These is also the price of a curator/mgmt. person to consider. We would need to have someone manage all aspects of new art and relevant historical documents sourcing and promotion of shows and related events related to these things.
As we move further and further away from the Times of Harvey Milk, we will need to have a reminder of just how significant he was. A space dedicated to Milk and the movement he inspired is a wonderful idea!
As an important part of San Francisco's culture and history, I think a gallery space is fitting, as well as an honor to the city and Harvey Milk.
Sounds like a fantastic idea -- culturally signficant as a living history destination for the **** community and their supporters, artisans and their admirers, and social historical buffs in general! Brilliant!
