  Sounds like you discovered a need in your market – where to go for resources for the creative community. That’s always the first step in a successful venture!
  
  Let’s take a step back before we dive into how to “make advertising work.” The question for any advertiser is, "How cost effectively can I reach my target audience?" That dovetails into your revenue model. If you are going to depend on Google Ads to support your business, especially in the first months, I can almost guarantee that the virtual doors will be shut before they are opened.
  
  Google Ads is dependent on the traffic to your site. You can be paid in two ways. The first is when a visitor clicks on an ad that is placed on your site by Google. So the more people who visit your site the more opportunity you have for “click for pay.” The second way is if an advertiser thinks your site is a valuable property where she can promote her product/service by placing an ad on your site. In that case there is a bid process based on cost per thousand impressions. Again, this is based on …morethe traffic to your site.

  Consider exploring other revenue models. Since it appears your concept is to build an online directory of services think of a tiered sponsor package. For example - Apprentice Level: Free Basic Listing Chorus Level: Rotation on the home page for 30-days. Rock Star Level: Above the fold on the home page for 30-days with an interview.
  
  Since your services are local to the area, I'm betting that there are many providers who will want to support your efforts. As part of your launch strategy (and it could be on-going) develop a page of sponsorship company logos (which of course link back to websites). Cost can be determined on size and placement.
  
  Although the directory is for the creative community .. they might also participate in a welcome-glad you're here logo page where they pay a small fee to support your efforts.
  
  As great as your idea is in the clutter world of websites, your community will not come unless you tell them you exist. Your focus on guerrilla and online marketing is right on target. In your plans include some money to hire a search engine optimization firm. They can help with getting organic or natural search right. In addition, you might consider buying some Google sponsored link ads. The SEO company can help you with that as well.
