  I just saw in the Seattle Times, and I'm pretty sure it was a wire service story, about a woman who has started just such a business without the eco-quality toy angle. So it definitely can work!

  We have received very few high priced eco-friendly toys in our kids lives, but the ones that are high quality eco toys are the ones we want to keep for generations! it's the crappy plastic ones that we end up freecycling, craigslisting, consigning, or heaven forbid, throwing away. I do like the toy lending library idea. I am curious where the price point is, and also how you deal with someone simply not returning the toy. Getting something to the post office is a big pain in the you know what. The toy lending library - community center or neighborhood center? seems like a fun approach although not a money making one.

  I think you are right to be concerned about the price of the toys. It would be a shame if your only customer base were those parents who may be able to afford these usually high-priced eco-friendly toys. Perhaps there could be a facet of the site that is not only recycling old toys but sponsoring giving toys to needy families. Perhaps there could be an online competition like this one where people would sponsor a family (maybe around the holidays) that would receive discounts or free toys.

  This sounds like a neat idea, especially with people worried about unsafe, toxic toys. That said, if my children are representative, toys rarely make it through their hands without being seriously scarred/damaged/lost. The exceptions are big, high ticket items like rocking horses, baby excercise saucers, bouncy seats, etc. Perhaps you should focus on larger, high-end products like these that moms already tend to pass around. The economics will be better because of the factors of cost, durability and existing habitual behaviors/attitudes.

  I agree with above - with a decent marketing plan, focusing on the right customer, you can definitely charge a higher fee. Your point-pricing plan is innovative as well. It's a simple concept and understandable that you're charging a premium.
