Accredited Online Elective Classes for High School Students. Sterlingteaches.com
Idea Description
Currently there is a growing trend for online education. Many states are turning to online education to save money, and to help students advance. Unfortunately the bulk of the classes offered are only the basic courses Math, English, Science, which are great, but there needs to be opportunities for high school students to also take electives online. Classes such as video production, graphic arts, office computers, Web design, should also be available for students to take. I am spending time right now with R&D, I asked my students for tips on my classes, I am revamping them. While I am doing this I am putting all my R&D on a website. Courses will be coming soon. What will you do if you win $10,000 for this idea?
Currently I am testing various screen capture programs, and Content Management Systems that will enable to me not only broadcast assignments but collect the homework as well. About $700 will go towards a screen capture program, $300 will go towards various hardware to make the lessons, (ie microphones). Around $2500-3000 will go to the design of a database driven site that will be the backbone of the classes. $2000 will be used for some software titles that I would teach but don't have the licenses to. Around $2000 will be used for legal fees, and start up fees. $1000 Will be used for Advertising fees, and the rest will be used for miscellaneous unforeseen fees.

Q1: I am looking for free open source software that I can tell students to use as an alternative to expensive software programs. (I want to teach concepts then demonstrate multiple applications) I know of Photoshop/Gimp MS Office/Open Office, Anyone know of other freeware/opensource software? Thanks!

Post a commentThis is in response to the pogo stick comment: Part of the pleasure from the old fashioned pogo stick is that it's painful to use and uncommfortable. In a world where everything is accomidating, wouldn't it be nice to have something that isn't?
