Helping Teachers PayOff Student Loans
Helping Teachers PayOff Student Loans
Idea Description
I am currently working on starting a non-for-profit to help third-year teachers pay off student loans. Do you know that most teacher's loans are three times what they will make in one year as a first-year teacher? Do you know that teacher's annual increases do not even cover cost-of-living expenses? Do you know that most new teachers have to work a part-time job at night or on the weekends (and during the summer when they should be able to refresh and plan for the next year's class) just to make ends meet? That means many of them can't make the full commitment to the kids which is the reason they opted to get certified to and take a lower paying job to begin with.
What will you do if you win $10,000 for this idea?
Oh my goodness, first of all, if I could win this via IdeaBlob, that would give me a great opening line for my donation drive. That would mean that young people are behind this idea. The money would be used to solicit addition funds from celebrities, sports figures, entrepreneurs and the like. The money would fund this drive (which would be via snail mail) but I would also use the funds to set-up the organization as a non-for-profit, establish a website where donations can be made and where teachers can post their "tales of operating in the red" and what a show of support like this would mean to them personally and how it would affect the kids in their classroom directly.
Vote for it now.

Q1: The biggest challenge is going to be to get those first few supporters. Once those are solidified, I know the word would spread like wildfire.
The next challenge would be legal matters (setting up the organization and legalizing how the funds would be distributed).
I think this is a wonderful idea! I have been stuggling for 3 and a half years now. I teach in a high poverty area and I have been waitressing while teaching for two and a half of those years just to afford to live. Every month I struggle and wonder how I will make ends meat. But I love teaching and I really don't want to leave the field. If this idea takes off it would really benefit our student population. Along with lowering my stress level!! Thanks for this idea. I hope it takes off!
I have to say that I pray daily for help like this. I teach fourth grade in a Title I high poverty school building--I have gone back to school to get a masters to raise my salary to pay undergraduate loans and have added graduate loans to my bill. I begin payment on my loan debt in July and I often cry myself to sleep wondering how I am going to do this. I will be paying my student loan debt until I retire! I think about all of the people (celebrities..ect) in this world that own watches that are the equivalent in price to the over 70,000 I owe in student loan debt!! If you get this idea off of the ground I will be your first applicant! Alyson
Please feel free to send this idea to all of your teacher friends for their vote/comment. Also, I'd be more than willing to accept any creative criticism to make this idea even better and more appealing to those who may be willing to donate to the cause.
Having some teaching experience myself, I love this idea! In fact I'm one of those teachers that left to increase my earnings although I moved into a totally new field. Good luck with your idea!
Thanks for your input, Lisa. Yes, I do, in fact, mean that any teachers with 3 PLUS years ... absolutely! Sorry, that was not completely clear.
It would be a better idea if it were extended to all teachers with 3+ years who are still paying off their initial student loans. I can tell you that after 9 years of teaching I still owe a hefty chunk.
Thanks you for forwarding. I ask ANYONE out there who can forward this to a group of teaching professionals to please do so. I feel strongly that once the word gets out this thing can take off. I know that the budgetary constraints in a school system are very tight because of unfunded programs that the government requires schools to undertake and, who gets losts in the shuffle of beaurocracy? Yup, the teacher. He/she is the one that is working in the "trenches" every day and the only way for them to increase their earning is to leave the classroom and join the forces in administration. Unfortunately, when this happens a lot of really good teachers have to leave those kids in the classroom behind just to be able to afford a new car every 8-10 years!!!! Now, I realize this…more is not a solution to the entire problem but it will help alleviate a burden. When I say burden, this may seem like a powerful word and some might suggest "if a teacher believes it's a burden, then why did they make this choice in the first place?" Let me address that: teaching is a calling. Some people may choose to teach even if it costs them money to do so - and, as we see by the number of teachers who are in debt, they do all the time!!!
