60x60 online submission process
Idea Description
The 60x60 project is a one hour concert containing 60 recorded works 60 seconds in length that is performed in venues through out the world, giving a great many composers the opportunity to have their work heard. The online submission engine will allow composers to upload their songs as .aiff and .wav files along with their biographies for the annual submission process rather than mailing them in, a time-consuming and expensive process. Judges from around the world will be able to listen to these works remotely in order to choose the semi-finalists for the final 60, who will be included in the 60x60 International Mix.
What will you do if you win $10,000 for this idea?
If Vox Novus wins the $10,000.00 we will invest the first $3600 in a server that can accommodate the bandwidth and storage of the audio files for two years. The cost is approximately $150 a month. The software design has already been created and needs only to be implemented by a web programmer costing $2,200.00. Another $2,200.00 will be spent to administer the process and lastly the final $2000.00 will be used as honorariums for the judges reviewing the works.

Add a commentRobert has been a notable supporter of contemporary music. As a composer himself, his brainchild “60x60” has been generating invaluable opportunities for young and established composers alike!
Robert has given a tremendous amount of opportunities to composers at different stages of their careers. Vox Novus is a wonderful service organization of his founding and 60x60 is perhaps the most innovative idea in contemporary music today, giving hundreds of composers the opportunity of being heard in a variety of unique contexts.
I have known Robert for a very long time and Vox Novus and 60x60 is a very refreshing sound.
60x60 got me started off as a music person - it's a brilliant project which has a unique sound, and an upload service would add to it enourmously. David.

60x60 is definitely one of the most interesting projects in contemporary music. And the on-line thing will help making it even better. Mario
Appeal towards internationalizing '60x60': vote for VoxNovus !
The 60x60 is a wonderful project that has been dedicated to promoting the work of contemporary composers for the last 5 years and counting. I have every confidence that 60x60 founder Rob Voisey will use the funding efficiently and judiciously for the greatest possible impact on the field of new music. Vote for 60x60!
great project with a proven record of accomplishment. deserves support.
Rob has worked very hard to make this organization work. I think this award would provide a big boost to the organization and make the submission process much easier. That, in turn, should make the programs even better!
Rob's generosity to the community of contemporary composers is a beautiful thing!
Vox Novus is an exciting organization and I've started to work with Rob on collaborative projects between choreographers and composers, with dance included in 60x60. I can attest to the viability and integrity of this project. Tell all of your friends!
We have an online system for NWEAMO that makes things MUCH easier. I don't understand how you've been doing this via CD all these years. Go Robert!
Robert Voisey and VoxNovus is a positive factor for contemporary music composition.
I'd just like to echo the comments above - VoxNovus and Robert have done so much for contemporary music, I couldn't be more behind this idea! :)
As one of the composers involved with the 60X60 Project, I wholeheartedly support & applaud Robert Voisey on any endeavour undertaken. Please vote for this idea so that VoxNovus & Robert can continue to realise his vision!!
The 60x60 project is already an exceptional organisation thanks to the dedication of Rob Voisey and others. Uploading on line would be even better, considering the project's international international remit, both in delivering the product efficiently and engaging more people to help in the selection process.
Rob Voisey and the 60x60 project opened up a whole new world of music opportunities for me. His was the first competition I had ever entered a piece for, it was selected, has toured the U.S.A & was included on a 60x60 CD. As if that weren't enough encouragement Rob then submitted the CD to a Canadian Radio Art Festival and my piece was selected again. He's relentless in his pursuit of providing opportunities for composers at all stages of their development and I can't thank him enough! Julia
great 60x60 project ! uploading online submission possibility will help it !
This is such a great, innovative project, offering so many composers opportunities to be heard in a variety of venues. Let’s reward Rob’s generosity over these past several years and in years to come by helping making the process much more manageable. He really deserves this support for all he’s done for us!
It is a great idea to have an online submission for the 60X60 project. I recommend a simple and friendly user interface. Since its origins, the 60X60 project has been one of the few unpolluted artistic venues for experimental art. The project carries on with its original purpose of showcasing as many artists as possible. It is unique in that respect. I hope the project keeps growing. Bravo for Rob
This is a great project. Robert is a true friend to new music and composers.
If it's recorded, how will it be "performed in venues all over the world "? will I go to my local concert hall and listen to a podcast on really good speakers?
60x60’s collective approach in the music presentation is very unique! It not only creates an interesting program and venues for composers to showcase their works, but also generates a close and authentic music community within 60x60 circle!
Robert Voisey is an inspired impressario with a tireless and dedicated vision of introducing cutting edge music to new audiences. This project helps people discover new music--within a single hour you can hear 60 different composers!--and it helps give composers exposure in places they would not ordinarily have it. Being an international project, it brings people together through the everywhere-understood language of music. Congratulations and rock on 60x60!
Rob Voisey has been a crusader for a diverse community of composers around the world who seemingly already never sleeps or eats - I think this is a terrific idea - it will make the submission process so much easier for even more international composers' voices to get heard who might not easily be able to submit via the post. In addition, it will free up more resources (including Rob Voisey's time and energy) for the 60x60 project to present live collaborations with choreograhers and videographers and other media - bringing together diverse Global Communities of Artists. With Rob Voisey's help, i am hoping to put together a concert featuring a collaboration of 60 choreographers with the 60x60 2007 international mix here in Boston - a further step forward in building global communi…more
I have had the privilege of attending 60x60 events, and strongly support Rob's incredible effort, amazing work and innovative ideas!
The online submission option Rob is proposing would be invaluable to development of electronic and electoacoustical music--an easier submission process = more submissions, more voices exchanging ideas. Composers must prepare several if not many submissions each year, which are very time-consuming and emotionally exhausting even when one has everything at hand. With snailmail, submissions are more likely to get postponed or not sent at all. With deadlines to be met year-round, the electronic submission in just a few easy clicks makes it possible to work the piece to its finest possible version for the stiff 6x60 competition. The artwork goes directly and environmentally responsibly to its destination, no paper, no stamps, no wasting gas to get to the Post Office. This option would bring eve…more
This is the most important and vital organization and mechanism to come along in decades to actively support and sponsor contemporary music. Vox Novus untiring support for composers and multi-artists, their innovation in presentation and dissemination, and the breadth of their artistic influence and collaboration should be fully supported and rewarded. Vox Novus is an international treasure!
Vote submitted. :o) If anything in this world is worth supporting, 60x60 is. Excelsior!
60x60 is a unique project for many reasons, but one that I very much appreciate is that it has a democratizing effect on the music it presents, putting established composers alongside up and coming ones by giving all of them the same boundaries to work within and the same means of presentation of their work. It is therefore a great opportunity for composers as well as a chance for audiences to hear a tremendous variety of music. It is a project very much worth supporting.
Regardless of the fantastic artistic value that the 60X60 project holds, it has an immense practical value. There are too few opportunities for composers to be heard! 60X60 gives hundreds of composers a rare opportunity to be heard. By streamlining the submission process: more composers from around the globe will be able to submit their music at a far smaller expense; the people administrating/judging the music will have more time to invest into the artistic side of the project and not wasting hours opening envelopes and dealing with sometimes faulty or damaged media; and the public will get to hear more new music from more composers. Everybody wins!!
60x60 is an amazing project. Robert's hard work and generosity have given many composers a chance to be heard. This is a project that benefits many people and deserves to be supported.
Rob is a great man and the idea of this project is a perfect example of his mission to create opportunities for all artists. I am proud to support this idea.
I took 3 pre-teen girls to hear a 60 x 60 concert, and they were facinated by the diversity of sounds, styles, characters, and ideas. At the end, they were able to talk coherently about the music, so I know the show is successful for both the new music crowd and "outsiders". In a time when there are fewer and fewer opportunities to be heard, Rob has created an international platform for a huge number of established and emerging composers and performers, and it's entertaining, too!
This project is a wonderful and creative way to produce and distribute contemporary electronic music. I expect Robert and 60x60 project continuous success!
Rob is has done an amazing thing with the 60x60 project. He has activated every corner of the music composition community and beyond. The 60x60 project gets composers creating new innovative short format works, exposes an audience to a sampling of composers spanning a diverse range of styles, and provides a unique one hour tour of contemporary composition and music making practices. I'm thrilled to have participated and can't wait to see how 60x60 evolves in the future.
Rob's project has given has given many composers significant exposure and his eager collaborations with video artists and choreographers have further widened the scope of this most worthy effort. The keynote here is the notion that this concept builds community, and at multiple levels. 60x60 deserves substantial support in light of the ever-widening audience that it reaches.
Hi ! first...excuse my english...just : congratulations for 60x60...such an amazing project...known in France ! Hoping to participate one day ! Best regards
I remember when Vox Novus was just an idea. It has been amazing to see this idea grow into an international community of musicians, composers and performers. Congratulations are in order, even if you do not win this online submission contest. But I have my fingers crosed. Be well.
Just to echo the comments above, the 60x60 project has been crucial in giving many electronic and contemporary composers (including myself!) their first 'leg-up' - thanks a lot Rob, and all the best with the contest!
The 60 x 60 project gives not only the chance to composers from all over the world to get a platform to show their vision into music, but the project is also an important opportunity for a broad new public to get in a relative short time the possibilty to listen to a spectrum of new music on an almost playful way...all the best to Robert Voisey. Kindly greetings, John Maters
This is a great project, as evidenced by its burgeoning profile and international participation. It is growing beyond Rob's ability to handle it on his own as it is now structured. He could really use this money to create a system that would provide access and allow it to continue to grow.
I have been witness to the evolution of this project and Rob's ability to combine global creativity! A true artist, composer and friend. I fully support this incredible project!
I think what Robert is doing is amazing. This is such a great venue for emrging composers!
Rob has and will continue to make this great idea work in powerful ways.
An extemely important way for contemporary music to be heard across the country and the world. Generates original works and provides an excellent vehicle for composers young or old. 60X60 engages in concerts and broadcasts thoughout the year.
an excellent idea by an outstanding artist and composer. the project has provided an opportunity for new composers to be heard in some of the most innovative venues in modern music. it is my hope that the project will be around for a long time to come. good work and good luck!
Mr. Voisey is the Franz Liszt of our time. Being is a remarquable composer in his own right; he should be well on his way into the big commission league. Instead, he selflessly chose to devote most of his time (and career) to the compositions of others, making sure that as many voices and styles could be heard by the largest possible audience. His commitment (for years already) to the promotion of contemporary music, composers, as well as other artistic forms (video, dance) stands as an outstanding example for us all. Robert is our reminder that - as a small community, we need to help one another, join forces so that our common purpose will not forever disappear under the dismissive 'I don't understand' or worse, by the disheartening indifference or sheer ignorance that we face everyday…more
Great idea with many "reverberations." It would be nice, however, if people would stop suggesting that the artists (musicians) should support themselves ("donate"). We need to find a way to have a society that is not only willing, but enthusiastic about supporting its artists/musicians. - Karen (DeKalb)
Robert Voisey's 60x60 project is unique. We are proud to be part of it.
Robert Voisey's project has transformed the notion of a concert entirely. He has acknowledged that contemporary listeners have very different listening habits than previous generations. He has also, through the idea of 60 X 60, helped man people listen to music bycomposers both famous and emerging, while transforming their abilities to address form in a very very short space of time. KUDOS!
60x60 is a clear, tight concept that's realized beautifully every year. As with most ahead-of-their-time creative projects, this project is a labor of love. 60x60 deserves funding for a submission process that's as streamlined as its basic concept is. -Kala Pierson.
60X60 is a fun & wonderful project - a great opportunity to hear a lot of interesting new music and a nice framework to work on something one may not otherwise have. 60x60 gives a lot to the artistic community, fresh ideas, and stimulates creation - yet needs financial support. 60x60 and the many composers participating in this exciting project defiantly will be most grateful should we win! Thanks, Carolyn P.S. Pick us!
comments should cout as 2 votes. Keep up the good work Robert! Though I have thus far been too lazy to write someting that last less than 60 seconds to submit, Robert has introduced me to people and places that I would have not met otherwise. And 60X60 is a great idea and concept.
This is a great project because it gets the composer's work out and creates community. How else could you hear 60 musical ideas in 60 minutes? The community keeps growing and will be very grateful for support of this project.
I found out about 60X60 three years ago. After having performed in New York that evening, I returned to the loft of a musician friend of mine to spend the night, and his artist roommate handed me a program for that year's 60X60 concert, saying "Here, you're a musician. Maybe you'll find this interesting." I was struck by the artwork of Shimpei Takeda on the program. It was so beautifully done, I saved the program. The aesthetic captured so much of what I'd been working towards in my own work, and immediately I felt a kinship with Robert and the composers in the 60X60 project. And I knew some of the composers personally, such as Robert Carl and Scott Smallwood, and had admired for years to work of Maggi Payne. The 60X60 idea is brilliant. The world desperately needs to be more eng…more
...by the way, that should have read, "THE work of Maggi Payne". Serves me right for being so hasty...
A tremendous undertaking that deserves support. Rob's efforts are truly essential.
The fact that Robert is continuing to innovate in his support of 60X60, and the composers involved, by including it here at ideablob.com testifies to the enduring nature and high quality of the project, his unflagging commitment to it and the cutting-edge proposal that it evinces. 60X60 is not merely a “time capsule” concept but a unique means to disseminate some of the most interesting music being composed today and, in the process, bring many composers to the awareness of a potentially vast audience. The composers featured include some of the world’s most innovative artists and the concert programming is first-rate. The published CDs are stunning in execution and technical quality. 60X60 is a project that deserves our continued support!
Rob Voisey has worked very hard over many years for the betterment of the new music world and over a thousand fellow composers. His ongoing 60 x 60 project has been a groundbreaking success, with live performances of the project occurring in all corners of the U.S., as well as in many venues around Europe. Add to that the CDs, and Mr. Voisey has single-handedly created a stunningly diverse musical community where there had been none. Bravo to Rob!
Questions I need advice on
- Q1.
- The intention of the online submission process is to keep the submission process free to the composer/sound artist. I would love to hear your suggestions for adding other income generators to the project without incurring expense to the artist. Respond

Advice
Suggest or simply charge a minimal fee ($1.00) for admission to the various venues where 60x60 is being performed. State the reasons for the fee as stated above, so the public will understand where exactly the money is going.
You can always have google ad words on the site and that generates income for you. That means you would have to have advertising on the site to generate income that was not coming from the artists. It's a toss up, if you want to have advertising on the site or not. There are also all other types of advertising you can sell on the site (banner ads, etc, etc) to generate income as well.
You could also have a membership fee to people to access the site.
Given your likely market (highly educated, erudite, older 40-65 yo, etc), my feeling is that if you provide a real service for lsiteners, you could solicit donations. This type of crowd is particularly apt to give money in the form of a donation if there is a easy to use system, and they find value. Furthermore, if you wanted, you could register as a non-profit and provide tax redemptions to people who contribute.
Just some thoughts, hope you found them useful!
Another thought would be to solicit grants from music foundations. You would probably have to have a proven concept for that though...
Look at community radio like KEXP.com and see how they do fundraising drives and such. Donations would be a big help. Also maybe express to your bands that this is a free service to help them gain recognition, and if they do gain in popularity they could donate to the site to help others.
I would suggest against adds because our society is very tired of being thrown into an add spiral.
Sticking with the idea of requesting a membership fee to those who visit the website, and providing a service to validate that fee, you could offer a members-only music player to play the music from previous years... or offer a members-only collection of downloads for the music from previous years. And you could do something like "membership level #1 gets 20 downloads, membership level #2 gets 60 downloads, and membership level #3 gets unlimited downloads".
Hope this helps...

I love if 60X60 can present againg the dance + music series, I think is a great idea mix diferent medias, especially if them can go together.
Hope this helps...

This is a great idea to further 60x60! Kudos go to Robert Voisey and to 60x60!!
Rob and the composers of Vox Novus work very hard and create great material. They deserve all the support that can be given to them.
I think this site does lend itself to an advertising model for revenues. You should definitely use available advertising resources to help support your site.

I was going to suggest charging for downloads, but Reconsiderate beat me to it and gave more thorough advice. I suppose a CD would be too old fashioned?
60x60 is a great project that gives many composers a voice
