Besides Make, Model, Serial Number, add a Recovery ID to product Identification. Consumers have the option to Register products to profile
Idea Description
So when you purchase a new hand held gizmo or anything else you might lose in a cab / airport, you have the option to register the product to your online profile, and the RecoveryID web service would use the recoveryID to notify the owner with a how to recover message from the finder.
This idea is not small potatoes, 100s of thousands of objects are
lost then tossed every year.
I have a poor man's version of the system at
http://LostAndFoundStickers.com
There is an opportunity to co-brand with RecoveryID.com and use the Recoveryids on your own stickers as well as your own url. Your site would have a link for people to activate sticker or take action if found something.
What will you do if you win $10,000 for this idea?
I already have the system in place, so I would use the money to work with manufacturers to incorporate Recovery IDs in there product descriptions.
Vote for it now.
You should check out Boomerangit.com, as this seems very interesting as well. Please stop by and vote when you get a moment. I have some similar ideas I've filed patents on.
Hey Mark, Great Idea! I wonder if you could provide the warrenty registration service for individuals as well, sort of an all in one registration service, go to your web site if you lost your device to post a reward, etc for recovery, or if you found a device look through the database to see if it was reported as lost, etc. The wattenty angle may draw users. Just a thought.

When I started I was unaware of Codetag.com and others that have been around since 2000. I started with stickers that used Humor and Guilt to illicit a Good Samaritan response. No matter how you slice it, putting a sticker on your smooth glassy ipod is like a bumper sticker on a Mercedes. So I would like my Recovery ID to be part of the Product Description group. Thanks to everyone, I believe winning this contest will be a life changing event.
I think this idea is way cool. I hope it becomes the next worldwide success!
Great idea. The stickers were a good start but I agree... there's just something about putting a sticker on your iPod... Good luck!

Great idea. Would make it a little harder for thieves to sell stuff without having to scratch off product tag first.
Pretty cool idea. This would be a great way to notify owner of recalls..Not that companies want to plan for that sort of thing.
I signed up for free stickers - thanks.
just lost my cell phone in a snow drift few weeks ago. Wish I had a recovery ID. Fantastic idea.
Way to go Mark... :)
from tomaswk Marketing thought - could you stage fake lost and found items with your sticker on it and put it in a public area and take a pic. Or get really funny tech items (Apple 2e) and put your sticker on it and take a pic and use it as marketing. Love the idea- I can keep losing my sony walkman cassette player, see who turns it in...
Everyone loses cellphones-I have -my kids have- and that can be expensive! you get this going let me know. I will promote on all my websites and blogs to hep market the product. This coud be the next Smiley Face!!!! Cybersensations-rebecca-Arkansas
I think you need to make it a product specific feature that the manufacturer will utilize as a sales promoter. Your job is to convince sony or target to tout this advantage over the competition. Loss and theft recovery. Too bad your sticker wasn't GPS tracked or even offered as an option. best of luck.....
Raffles There are many commercial operations trying to do what you are and quite a number already have 'bit the dust'. I am a commercial producer of asset labels and well aware of the materials on the market and who is trying to do what. Unfortunately your idea is neither new/unique or one that is commercially viable I appreciate your advice. I agree with your comment about idea being new/unique. However, only a few have this knowledge, so I believe the idea to be new to the general public. I am confident I can make it viable, and seem to get more motivation from discouraging advice. Cheers
