Wish Web - Grant a wish, make a wish
Wish Web - Grant a wish, make a wish
Idea Description
Wish Web encourages altruism through social networking by starting with a simple concept: if you grant someone's wish you can make your own wish.
When a user makes a wish it is added to The Web - a map with markers on it that represents the geographic location of the wisher. New users explore the web, choose a wish to grant and then coordinate with the wisher to fulfill the wish. Once the wisher confirms that their wish was granted a connection is made in the form of a line on the map between the wisher and the grantor.
As the web grows, the power of altruism to form connections in communities will become visually apparent. For once it will be easy to see how our good deeds connect us.
What will you do if you win $10,000 for this idea?
I will work with programmers to develop the site. There is no new technology needed for the site, so programming should be relatively easy. I plan on hiring students from local universities for the summer to work on the site.
I already have connections with non-profit organizations through work experience to recruit a first generation of wishers (people who get to make a wish without granting one first). As the site goes live I will contact these organizations (one works with people with intellectual disabilities - e.g. autism, mental retardation - and the other with people with ALS) to advertise the opportunity for their members to make wishes.
Vote for it now.

Q1: Any ideas on how advertise the site once it is live?
Great idea!!!
I like the idea alot. Something that got me thinking in conjunction with the Kiva idea is why not dream big? The connection that worked with this for me is my daughter's dream to go to Disneyland. Our family has had amazing tragedy and trials over the last few years, from my husband's motorcycle accident, to losing two of our homes and being homeless for three months this last winter. So...to tie it in with the Kiva idea for me...it could be something where people submit their wishes, and other people come together to create loans to make those wishes happen. Kind of like the best of alot of different ideas.
After the first generation of users, the wishers will of course be people who don't necessarily need their wish granted. That being said, I believe that if you grant someone's wish you deserve to have your wish granted in return. Also, you can wish for anything (as long as it is not violent or inappropriate), so you could wish that someone grants the wish of someone more in need. On types of wishes: Some people might wish for something simple (such as someone holding the door to their office open for them in the morning), while other will wish for something more outlandish. If the wish is too far out, it probably won't ever be granted (just because you wish for it doesn't mean someone will want to grant it). The cool thing is the organizers of the site won't judge any wish, the community…more that powers the site will by choosing which wishes to grant.
The real power of this idea is the web that will form as people start granting wishes for each other. Imagine a small town covered by the web of connections that have been made by people helping their neighbors. You will see how your good deed not only helped you, but connected you in your community to people who haven't even met.
