Q1: Because of their lack of allegiances, are teens better suited to influence cultural change than adults? Does this have negative or positive impact?
(1 reply)Are you sure you want to report as abuse?
by LegacyMan08.19.08 | 10:00 AMYes. Not so much just because of lack of allegences, but because you don't have the weight of previous failures steering you to the safe road.
You dream because you don't know that "adults" shouldn't (conventional thinking, not my philosophy).
This is purely positive as you are at the point where you can succeed simply because you don't know how to fail. Your energy and focus will sustain you because you are following a passion at a time when your need to pay bills and provide for a family is non existent.
Chase your dream now. You will only regret it if you don't later.
Best of luck.

Q2: Considering the communications tools currently available, how much money does one need to influence global change? Should money even be a contributing factor to a person's influence?

Q3: If wisdom comes with age, what does it take for teens to be taken seriously in the business world? How young is 'too young'?
(1 reply)Are you sure you want to report as abuse?
by MWDabbs02.27.08 | 10:00 AMInitiative, Persistence, Flexibility/Focus; Research and Proof of Concept. The first three components are essential individual components. Flexibility/Focus may seem contradictory - know where you want to go, be somewhat flexible in how you get there; know what you need to stick to but be willing to compromise on the non-critical details. Be willing to compromise on the critical details when/if there is a solid reason to do so.
Research - know what you are going to do; know it better than anyone else. Talk to others; actively question other professionals; develop relationships with them; assess/scrutinize whether they really know what they are talking about. Keep your vision central, don't dismiss or accept your own or other's opinions outright. Understand that most businesses do not fail on the basis of technical expertise, but for not understanding their market and customers; and not understanding or developing their logistical capabilities. Understand the logistics of your business - how the personnel, materials and information essential to it will move.
…more />
Proof of Concept - More than anything else, coupled with good research - this is what will separate you from just about everyone else. Do It - demonstrate what you can do, detail it, show it in tangible form and action. The more you can show that you are walking and not just talking, the more likely any intelligent person in business is to take you seriously - regardless of your age. Keep records of everything that you do - pictures, notes, testimonials for the purpose of combining it all into presentations as needed.
Inventorspot underlines the importance of being of legal age to enter into contracts. That can be a legitimate barrier to entry, especially if you do not have a legal guardian able/willing to help you out. In cases like that, you might check with www.score.org - Service Corps of Retired Executives, an extension of the small business administration for guidance; and perhaps seek out a mentor. There are definitely ways around it though you definitely want to stick with people you can trust.

What advice do you have to help me grow my idea?
(11 replies)Are you sure you want to report as abuse?
by jpalace03.22.08 | 09:53 AMDan and John,
Renegade CEOs sounds like a good idea, and I'm checking it out because Shonika Proctor sent an email about it. Lazer bearings sounds like a good company idea as well, and you seem to be working hard to make it a reality.
The problem, and it is a problem, is that your contest entry idea is for Renegade CEOs but you state that you're going to use the money for Lazer Bearings. You don't need an MBA to see the ethical conflict there.
So... my advice is focus... If you need $10K for Lazer Bearings... go get it from an angel investor based on the solid business plan you've created. Don't waste energy on your second good idea until you've made your first successful. And... think hard about ethics, every day business people are faced with situations where they have to choose between what's good for them, and what's right. Choosing the right thing always ends up being better in the long run.
I'm voting for your idea even with seeming conflict of interest. I get the sense you two are the type who can hear advice and draw the right co…morenclusions.
Good luck.

by BSC740803.16.08 | 05:49 AMNow that that is out of the way. In my experience, age really doesn't matter. It comes down to the idea and its execution.
Let's face it, teens and young adults already influence our culture...walk through a mall. Teens are able to influence their pears better than an adult ever could.
Everyone knows that teens are networking machines.

by BSC740803.16.08 | 05:32 AMI like the idea! I started my business when I was 14 years of age. I believe that if the dream is big enough the facts don’t count. Here are my three cents.
1. If you plan to teach others how to start or market a business, it is very important that your business is started, ran and marketed correctly.
2. Develop and complete a detailed business plan. There are great entrepreneurial related groups throughout the USA. These groups contain retired businessmen and women that donate their time to help you develop and start a business.
3. Acquire people and sales skills. Business is all about dealing with people. Listed below are a few books that I like.
-How to Win Friends and Influence People - Dale Carnegie
-The Magic of Thinking Big - David Schwartz
-How I Raised Myself From Failure to Success Through Selling - Frank Bettger
-The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People - Stephen R. Covey

Are you sure you want to report as abuse?
by holyjoe02.29.08 | 08:20 AMAs a business owner, I would love to see teens and young adults succeed. I understand that the lack of funds makes a "brick and mortar" business an unlikely prospect, however, as we saw in the 90's, building an entire business on e-commerce can be short lived due to the ease at which your competition can start up.
When marketing your company (and this goes back to the e-commerce comment), remember the 4 P's of Marketing: Product, Price, Place, and Promotion. In e-commerce, you have already set the Place. You can adjust the others, however, if you ONLY set yourself apart by Price, you will find that someone bigger with more money comes along and squeezes you out (think of Wal-mart and the Ma-and-Pa stores). You need to carefully consider the Product and Promotion aspects to assure yourself that you have a niche market that is not easily duplicated by your competition.

Are you sure you want to report as abuse?
by migdalah02.24.08 | 03:35 AMPromotion of your cyber e-property (e-office and your service/products/ideas) is the 'influence' needed to global change; the MORE PEOPLE THAT VISIT AND REVIEW your proposed change, the more INFLUENCE. I understand that there are ways to promote your site economically or even gratuitously and then there are ways that are not econo or gratis!

Are you sure you want to report as abuse?
by migdalah02.24.08 | 03:26 AMIf wisdom is defined as: knowing what is moral, ethical, legal, effective for successful living, health or wealth acquisition and APPLYING it ...
then any degree of this can be attributed to old or young alike, indiscriminately. Hence, the measure of being taken SERIOUSLY in any life enterprise is application of wisdom (business wise or other wise). As the saying goes: wisdom is known of its children. Some might add 'street' wisdom and bottom-line parameters. Those that feel young are those that ARE young (hopefully differentiating from immature or ineffective. If business goals are set and achieved in $$ than one could say that the 19 year old millionaire and the 91 year old millionaire have millions in common and same question is asked of both: HOW DID YOU ACHIEVE YOUR MILLION? ;)

02.23.08 | 10:07 PMopps...I did not get to finish..
too young to take seriously on issues that are complicated and can adversely impact lots of people. But if they can have postive impact, its different.
Are you sure you want to report as abuse?
by inventorspot
02.23.08 | 10:05 PMI think it depends very much on what you are taking them seriously for.
Something to do with that kid/person you should take more seriously than an issue that is much more wide reaching and affects more people.
From a practical point of view, it is hard to take seriously someone who is not by law able to enter into an enforceable contract. In most states, the age in which you can enter into a contract I believe is 18.
I think anyone below 16 to me is too young

Post a commentYou guys are AMAZING. You're entry is so articulate, it's hard to believe you're teens! Had I known about Ideablob in March, you would have had my vote. Hey, BTW, my idea is in this month's finals. It's called "patron of the arts". check it out!
Hi, I posted an idea on ideablob and willrobinsoniii commented that you might find it interesting. I saw the Renegade CEOs site. Very cool concept. My idea is at http://ideablob.com/ideas/2513-Planting-caribbean-pine-tree-i I want to plant trees in Columbia near Las Gaviotas to help create jobs, address climate change and generally support this sustainable community. I read Alan Weisman's book Gaviotas a few years ago and was very inspired. Now I want to do more. Is this something you'd like to support? Can you help me get the word out? Thanks, Justine (sustainelaine)
This is a super idea. This would be a great tool for others.
Given what you know, try to locate a Mall or Shopping Center that is "going for broke"? And offer to open there an SBA VICI they give $150,000 grants. Then you'd have cash, a place to expand with OJT positions and room for more GREAT ideas! One's (malls) that have loading docks sure are easier to re-do. Lord Bless
good luck guys! i have faith in you!
ROCK - it's that is all about! Every kid can be successful, nice. As Lenin said about USSR, 'Every cook can rule the country' Good luck with cooks.
Just coming thru and giving support, we are definately going to make things happen I already know it

You guys have lots of potential! Keep up the good work! Hopefully this works out for you and you can use the 10 grand to expand your business and take your friends out to some really nice dinners.. Well I will be telling everyone I know to come vote in March.
My humble op is that you are staging two fronts - business and age! Could you maybe establish the two SEPARATELY: one site wage your challenge to the ESTABLISHMENT ... on the other, DO YOUR BUSINESS.
As always, you guys are outta control! I see you are ready for the world...but the question is are they READY FOR YOU?!?!? (i think not). Good Fortune to you for the March 2008 ideablob competition. (Fingers and toes crossed, lol). Love you both so much, Shonika Proctor FINALLY, The Underground Youth Entrepreneurship Movement Has Arrived...
