Develop a system and company to teach students how to learn.
Idea Description
The US education system is real good about teaching students what to learn but fails to teach students how to learn. The theories about how the brain learns are as diverse as we are different as people. As an educator, I have yet seen any practical and successful application to any learning theory. The first step in teaching people how to learn is to accept that the learning process differs in each of us. Even though, there are common organizational, processing, and problem solving skills we can each learn to enhance our ability to store and retrieve knowledge.
What will you do if you win $10,000 for this idea?
Focus my research on learning models with practical applications. Recruit the help of other educators with the experience to develop this system.
Vote for it now.

If you teach students "how to learn", will you then need to teach students how to learn "how to learn"?
yup! There are organizations in place who actually TUTOR, but what you are talking about is soooooooooooo different. I would get in touch with teacher educators close to you to see if there is any tangible and timely move toward this direction and see what happens. In the early 70's, the University of Houston Science Education Dept. was known for COMPETENCY BASED TEACHER Ed. (band-wagon then). Today, though, TRUE AND EFFECTIVE, EFFECTIVE learning is kind-of-feared by even some of the TEACHER EDUCATION establishment ... hopefully not too many of them, but most pedagogy 'club members' are legit and DO CARE. Do your homework and IT WILL HAPPEN! ... it is a NEED!
The biggest problem is that most schools are budget constrained on the one hand and curriculum constrained on the other (No Child Left Behind). There are lots of things that I would have on the curriculum and learning strategies is certainly one of them. I also think stuff life personal finance (credit, savings, investing, budgeting) and cooking are probably of greater value than quadratic equations and literary criticism. Of course, I love your idea!!!!!! A solution is found in 4-H. This youth development program has proven to help young people to learn how to learn with research-based curriculum. The educational framework is called hands-on learning or experiential learning and is found in the peer reviewed national curriculum. In each state there is a land grant university that houses an extension service with this very youth development component. If you are familiar with 4-H you probably remember cows and plows and state fairs, however it has evolved from its agricultural approach, and is found in urban areas partnering with adults and youth in areas of leadership, citizenship and life skills. It is funded by federal, state and local governments as well as concerned individuals who donate and partn…moreer for the cause. You don't have to remake the wheel.
Some of my greatest teachers have been those that taught me how to learn for myself. Sometimes it was in specific subject areas, like my computer class, the teacher admitted he didn't know everything, and showed us how to learn and find out information for ourselves. The skill of learning is a hard one to learn, but kudos to anyone who studies it. I look forward to reading your published results. Best of luck.
