MEI Scrapghans Hug
MEI Scrapghans Hug
Idea Description
MEI Scrapghans Hug is a small non-profit that began in 2005 to honor the memory of two very special ladies. The premise behind the organization is that needlerafters are often faced with a dilemma of extra materials left over when a project is done. Very simply, we ask people to take their scrap yarns/materials and fashion any kind of "square" and send it to us. We join the squares to create scrapghans (afghans made of scraps) to present to those who need the love and warmth a handcrafted afghan provides.
What will you do if you win $10,000 for this idea?
Of major importance is a space to catalogue and store squares and supplies. We will use the money to either create a storeroom or purchase a storage shed to be the Scrapghans official home. This space will have shelving and bins to put the squares and other donations in when they are received and an area to catalogue and keep track of everything - including our donors and volunteers. Money would also be used for PR purposes - updating the website, getting information printed and gaining an even larger volunteer/donor base.
Vote for it now.

Q1: Organization is our biggest issue right now as well as getting more people to help us out. Suggestions and ideas would be appreciated. Everything we do right now comes out of personal funds - which are limited - so ideas need to be frugal.
This sounds like a great way to give sewers the opportunity to give back to the those underprivileged individuals that need warmth. I'm not sure what the scope of your organization is so it is hard to say where to start.
But I will say that in order to get more fabric squares to deal with, I would start by making simple flyers at the different fabric stores around town. And maybe you could speak with the managers of these stores and allow you to set up bins in their store for people to leave their scrap squares for you to use.
Also, on these flyers you could have a contact number for those individuals that would like to be a part of your organization. I'm sure that you will be able to find some nice people that will be willing to volunteer some of their time as a charity or community service.
