Network switch with programmable colored LEDs on each port that designate VLAN or other information.
Idea Description
Network switch with a multi-colored LED at the corner of each RJ45 port. LED would be used to visually identify (by color) specific information about individual ports (e.g. VLAN, specialized purpose, etc.). Ports could be pre-programmed so that technical support staff (without admin access) could properly patch devices like PCs, IP phones, printers and access points by visual identification. Colors would be pre-assigned by VLAN or could be individually overridden by port. LEDs would be similar to those on the NIC RJ45s as opposed to the amber-green speed/duplex LEDs on most switches.
What will you do if you win $10,000 for this idea?
Elaborate the design and try to get a patent -- but I'm open to any suggestions if the idea is deemed viable.
Vote for it now.
