Teach elementary students how to program through video games, targeting minorities first
Idea Description
Remember math blaster, it made learning math fun. I have begun working on a prototype to get kids excited about programming. Most kids love electronics and the software they use, but don't even dream about creating such software. I want to make creators out of these consumers, because I know they have great ideas, as power users, I want to empower them with knowledge.
What will you do if you win $10,000 for this idea?
Get my prototype online and start contacting DC inner-city schools about free after school programs use my software. I teach them and as well they will give me feedback on how to better help them, so I can improve my software.
Vote for it now.

I remember using LOGO (at least I think that was what it was called). It entailed moving a triangle around the screen using angle measurements and other details. Great idea for higher level thinking, which everyone can use!
I use technology such as math games on the computer to reinforce math concepts when I teach my all male classroom. They love it!
the only problem is that whenever education is billed as fun, it ignores the fact that no educational experience is "fun" all the time. sometimes kids also need to be asked to confront the idea that learning is not fun, and they should do it anyway. the problem in the dc schools isn't that there isn't enough fun going on, it is that there isnt enough learning.
I reackon learning is only ever 'not fun' when it is out of context. People don't even notice that they are learning when what they are learning is actually interesting to them and their situation. If you happened to be wanting to write a novel set in medieval Spain, I'm sure the names and dates involved would be far more interesting and you would probably remember them better too. The point is, kids get bored at school because what they are being asked to learn has be stripped of all context that would make them care. In short, the idea of contextualising learning is brilliant and needs to be done more often. I agree that you have to be careful... it is easy to make too much game and not enough learning, but yeah. Educational software... done properly, is definitely the way of the futur…moree!
Everyone(both kids and grown ups) learn something everyday! It may not be the Quote Educational Required 4 R's. Life is always a Learning Experience! Your Idea is Very Good and I Hope You Success! We do need more people like you! Thanks.
