roadway and bridge repair funding
roadway and bridge repair funding
Idea Description
When we get our vehicles inspected, the mileage is recorded. Why not assess a mileage "tax" based upon the number of miles a vehicle is driven, to pay for roadway and bridge repairs? After all, the more mileage that vehicles are driven, the more wear and tear our transportation infrastructure undergoes. [We could even do away with the turnpike toll system, if we were to use this as a more appropriate financing source!]

What advice do you have to help me grow my idea?
I can't say I love the "tax" idea, but what about something "like" what I believe Singapore has implemented, with the "license" to purchase a car being purchased, and then cars at a certain age or with certain deficiencies were taken off the road. The trick with the idea the way you've positioned it is that I could get around it by getting myself a new car as often as possible, and be one of the worst offenders as far as miles driven per person.
I think this possible legislation would make politicians weary to impose such a tax. It is along similar lines of what NYC is trying to pass with their congestion plan. It hasn't passed yet, becasue the public is in an uproar. How would you treat people that commute from state to state? What would you do with the money?
