Adopt a Peace Corps Project through Facebook
Adopt a Peace Corps Project through Facebook
Idea Description
Develop an application for Facebook that will connect Peace Corps volunteer projects around the world to Facebook members who are willing to donate time/energy/resources to those projects. Donations of goods and services that aren't locally available will allow volunteers to get many projects underway.
UPDATE: Community engagement and sustainability are ideals that are key to successful Peace Corps projects and will be a major consideration to how this application will be developed. The Third Goal of Peace Corps is also a core ideal and will be added into the project as well. http://www.peacecorps.gov/index.cfm?shell=Learn.whatispc.mission
What will you do if you win $10,000 for this idea?
Locate a web development company that specializes in Facebook applications and work with them to develop and project plan.

Q1: What is the potential for fraud/abuse? How is that avoided?
frh - they'll put you where ever they think they can use you. It's not so much you'd be working in the capacity as an anthropologist specifically, but that those skills will come up once you're in your country.
this is a question not a comment but whatever. if i'm an anthropology major can i still go into the peace corps, where would they need and anth major?
I have to say, the lighted pacifier or the Peace Corps Facebook idea, NO CONTEST. Go Scott, don't give up, this could have great implications worldwide, and working for an organization with lots of ex-PC volunteers, anything we can do to connect them to resources and support, we need to try to do. SC
great idea
This idea should be taken directly to Facebook so they might setup a program to connect developers with non-profit groups. Virb.com has a program that's similar that connects designers and non-profits. It's then a win-win situation because all three parties are promoted.
actually a great idea- see many plans that people are actually going to implement not ust benefit thier bank accounts bravo!
Great idea. So much better than a pacifier that lights up.
As a future Peace Corps volunteer this is a great way to connect those working in other countries to the US. This goes directly with the goals and aspirations of Peace Corps as an organization. I truly hope this idea wins, I think it will be very successful!
Definitely a great idea. Good luck and if you don't win do it anyway! :)
Please be so kind and return the vote, good luck! Stevo Perisic
Rock on Scooter... a great idea that deserves to be funded! VOTE FOR THIS IDEA!
Excellent idea! Good luck!
Scott, I voted for your killer idea. It is way too difficult to receive resources as a PCV, and if Peace Corps isn't willing to help then they should allow them to use their imagination.
This is a really IMPORTANT Idea, BlueOrange! Not just for the Peace Corps, but ALL Volunteers, whether operating as Individuals or as members of an organisation. I am a South African "former" Net software entrepreneur (last product http://www.ferretsoft.com) currently modelling a new non-profit start-up called AfriCorps on the U.S. Peace Corps, attempting to get local projects going in the poverty-stricken rural village in which I work. Although this Idea deserves the $10k, this idea can be pushed forward directly with Facebook who have a seed fund for up to $250,000, which is may be the kind of attention this application needs. It serves my purpose greatly to help you push this project into existence. I noticed it in the Yahoo Groups 'Peace Corps 2" mailing list.…more Perhaps we could discuss it further in that forum. Hope to see you there! http://groups.yahoo.com/group/peacecorps2/ Sincerely, Dave http://www.africorps.org
I just sent the idea to my daughter who is in the Peace Corps, a fantastic idea! All of these PC volunteers use Facebook to update friends and make connections in this very global world, this opens huge opportunities to get support globally for very important local projects!
This an excellent idea --I see alot of sustainable, community-based projects getting done through this. good work!
Awesome idea! I love it.
What a fantastic idea!
Great idea! This would provide for the exact sort of resources volunteers on the ground could use. Not sure how to go about it but it's a great idea.
This is a neat idea. I think you'd have to do it in collaboration with existing organizations. Have you checked out kiva.org? If not, look through their site to see what they're doing.
