Q1: What do you think are the best metrics for measuring the impact of the arts on an individual and a community? We currently intend to measure levels of participation.
(2 replies)Are you sure you want to report as abuse?
by art_lover01.16.08 | 04:18 PMYou might consider measuring the level of participation in the various collaborative projects. For instance, the amount of people that participate, levels of engagement, diversity of participants, participants' previous experience with the arts, etc.

01.15.08 | 12:41 PMArt without borders! This project is incredible. I definitely hope you win.

Q2: Our 5 Phase Plan culminates with an extremely ambitious project that will involve millions of people and thousands of events. The ability to organize online will be key. Forming groups, granulated user permissions, etc. We believe Drupal is the best CMS technology for building our site. Thoughts?
(2 replies)Are you sure you want to report as abuse?
by whuebl06.01.08 | 06:19 AMI have been using Zope/Plone, another CMS system which is geared to the level of your project. You need a robust, business enterprise system which can handle all your needs and while Drupal has many benefits and is easy to use, I would go for greater power with more features and products available.
Just my humble opinion.

03.05.08 | 11:20 AMDrupal is a powerful system but it may be hard to use it for the type of functionality you are looking for.
It has historically been used with smaller sites and smaller scale needs I believe. As far as I know, The Onion and InventorSpot.com are two of the largest and most complicated Drupal users out there. If you are talking millions of people and thousands of events, I wonder if Drupal will be able to provide you what you need without a lot of custom work.

Q3: We plan to micro-finance our projects to keep them accessible. We will incentivize larger donations by listing donors in order of amount and offering collectible items. Profits raised by each project will benefit established charities. Does this seem like a clear and effective business model?
(2 replies)Are you sure you want to report as abuse?
07.15.08 | 09:29 AMSeems clear, yes - but remember that the technology alone will not drive people to donate, no matter how easy you make it. When you look at models like Donors Choose or Kiva, who have successfully leveraged technology to support micro-financing of projects (education in the case of Donors Choose, a wide variety in the case of Kiva) it was the strength of the project that drove the interest. The impetus will be on you as the coordinator to not only make sure that the projects you highlight are excellent, but that each group knows how to make its case for support. Otherwise, I fear that you will have trouble getting people to return visit, invest over time, and become actively involved.

05.19.08 | 03:28 PMI am a fan of your One Second Film, which I learned about through our own partnership at Network for Good with Kevin Bacon -- sixdegrees.org. In terms of motivating donors, public recognition can be highly effective, so you are on the right track there. Other important pieces are allowing people to feel a sense of ownership, support things that reflect their personal affinities and give them a simple, fast and easy way to act on their generous impulses. In terms of collectible items, what did you have in mind? I think unless they are extremely tied to that personal affinity they may be less motivating. We've found another effective motivator to generate donations and to spur viral marketing is introducing an element of competition. So perhaps you could encourage larger donors to put up matches for top fundraisers. This has worked well for us. Deadlines also help - people need to feel a sense of urgency in order to act.

What advice do you have to help me grow my idea?
(5 replies)Are you sure you want to report as abuse?
06.04.08 | 08:33 PM@ tomaswk: Thanks so much! Part 1 of our Road to Oprah tour was an amazing journey! We are planning to launch Part 2 ( a Pacific North West Tour) after making some much needed changes to our website. But we are in touch with Oprah's producers, and editing some of the amazing footage we filmed from part 1.
@ katyaa: Cool that you had heard of us! Kevin Bacon's sixdegrees.org project us super cool, and we are honored to have his support. Our new site design will introduce "participation points" that keep count of individual contributions aside from money donated. As for competition, we have a few celebrity/non-celebrity bidding wars as donors out bid one another to get listed higher in our credits :). As resources permit, we may program a widget to allow participants to initiate a fundraising challenge. Thanks for the suggestions!
@ whuebl Thanks for the suggestion! We have been researching Plone, which seems like a very powerful enterprise solution, but from what we can tell, it may be too big for us currently; aside from needing to buy Oracle instead o…moref the free MySql; it also seems to have a slower performance than Drupal in serving info. But we will continue to look into it as there certainly is a lot more to learn, and it always helps to plan ahead. Thanks for pointing us in the Plone direction!

05.01.08 | 08:44 AMYou all are well deserving of the 10k - I checked out your website and love the idea. Road to Oprah might just be creative enough to catch her eye. Sometimes people buy advertising on billboards and newspapers that they know she sees as a way to get her attention. Best of luck to you, you have my vote and support.

"How are you actually going to enact your mission?"
Our plan is to scale the project up starting with "The 1 Second Film" collaboration. The 1 Second Film is one second of animation that was made during a large collaborative art festival that featured live music and performers while participants attending helped paint large murals. The murals were pre-designed to animate once completed. The art provided a platform for addressing issues surrounding Women's Human Rights.
Our future projects will create longer films that will be made during simultaneous events- each event will create the animation to depict one-second of the film.
There will be a lot of ways for people to participate depending on their level of interest. Events will be organized with the help of an online community that we are currently growing with The 1 Second Film project. Participants receive online profiles that will be geared toward facilitating collaboration, allowing participants to upload content to be incorporated into the finished f…moreilms, and providing another platform for discussing the various social issues that our future projects will discuss.
As the projects expand, we hope to build a network of collaborators around the world. The Collaboration Foundation will provide a hub for the community to interact with the projects of our 5 phase plan. Future collaborative projects may also develop from the community.
All artistic disciplines will be represented at the various collaborative festivals during which the frames of animation will be created. The events will include music, dance, performers, speakers, multi-media, etc.
Lots more info is on our websites:

04.13.08 | 11:44 AMI am a huge advocate of any and all services that allow talented individuals continue to use their artistic talents to be able to support themselves. I would like some more clarity on how this impacts the individual before even commenting on how you measure it. How are you actually going to enact your mission? I know from a college perspective student's are often a little freaked out but terms like 'large scale' and unsure how they can play a role in this. I may just be dumb but understand how this model works in developing a film but how can this apply to other artistic pursuits (studio art, music, dance etc)? You have a clear strategic mission I would just like some more detail around the other collaborative events you are considering.
Are you sure you want to report as abuse?
by jakilevy03.06.08 | 12:35 AMI believe Drupal can handle this - you should go to drupal.org and contact the drupal community directly about this. they would be excited about your idea and definitely help support it. the drupal community is very socially minded - after all, it's an open-source project.
in terms of metrics - i think measuring participation in some way is effective. if you can measure participation, you're golden, though i think it really depends on your end goal or what you're trying to achieve.
this might be very beneficial for artists, but not for communities (or vice versa), though i am sure it will be rewarding for both.
Idea Description
The Collaboration Foundation will build a non-profit online community for facilitating global collaboration and social-change. Using Web 2.0, we will connect a global network of participants with collaborative projects, allowing people around the world to create art without borders. Our flagship work-in-progress, "The 1 Second Film," currently has over 10,000 participants from 59 countries; profits from the finished film will benefit the Global Fund for Women. Future projects will expand in scale while addressing other critical social issues. Our goal is to bring the world together to make art that makes a difference.

What will you do if you win $10,000 for this idea?
We have a 5 Phase Plan to expand the Collaboration Foundation globally. The $10K will allow us to build the powerful website we need to scale up. Our new site will be free to join, allowing members to propose & participate with collaborative projects of various scale.

Love the idea, you got my vote! Wish you the best of luck with the competition!
Having been a participant and witness to the genesis of Nirvan's One-Second Film project over the years, I can honestly say his dedication and passion are second to none. This is an idea that has evolved into something much larger than many thought possible, and it still has much more room for growth. I hope the support pours in for this excellent and exciting project.
@mockie78 Thanks so much, that is exactly what we intend to do! And everyone else, thanks for the support! Please stay in touch, and Please help get out the vote to friends/coworkers! I work in film, and we need more people to stand up and collaberate together like this. And I am a producer for the 1secondfilm. So of course I support them.
I support this cause - it is great - keep up the good work :) This deserves the money!!
This is an amazing project that deserves to be realized!
Great Idea; could help a lot of artists around the world, and really inspire great things!
It's about time collaborative art have a real home on the internet! This Idea harnesses the power of the internet to inspire collaborative art on a scale never possible before. The one second film is just an example of one kind of project... Thousands of producers worldwide working together to make a film that is as much about those involved as the film itself. I can't wait to see all of the amazing projects the Collaboration foundation will inspire and foster in the years to come!
I am an actress.......I love this idea...Keep up the hard work. It's inspiring. xoxoxox
:-) voted!
Just voted for ya :)
Tammy M = Just voted ;) Goodluck! Lol at sickboy932's comment, pretty sure there are better ways to use that money :P
Neven. What are we going to do with the 10 Gs? I say we go to the track.
I'm not sure I get the point of this project. It needs more explaination. Even the website seems very vague.
I like this idea. I have a posting too: http://www.ideablob.com/ideas/2742-online-therapy-clinic check it out (and vote :) maybe we could collaborate or I could offer services.
Nice catch line. Over the years, P&G has moved from R&D to C&D Connect & Develop. In a nutshell, it is an innovation model which leverages expertise amongst oversees employees and the external environment over and above local employees to create a new product. You could emulate some of their models for collobaration: http://www.beingpeterkim.com/2006/11/procter_gambles.html http://nbhandar.blogspot.com/2007/11/c-p-innovation-model-revisited.html All the best!
This is such an incredible project and I am so honored to be a part of it. The IdeaBlob site is very much in line with the message of The 1 Second Film -- that even the smallest action (registering and voting for this idea) could have immense results ($10,000 toward Global Unity!). I hope enough folks take the action!
Hey Nirvan, Thanks for the email, and for the vote! (That is SO COOL that your person actually SPOKE with Oprah!) Congrats on being in the leading spot for most overall votes! Hopefully this month will be your turn to go for the gold! Keep in touch! C
This is an amazing concept. Best of luck! Let me know if we can help you with POTA! Cindy
Oh you want to make a film to create change about global warming. You want to create events to get people aware of this as if the people are ignorant about this. You will make millions from this but the big question is are you going to practice what you preach or are you going to join the status quo because you did your part and continue to be part of the problem.
this is a great big fun and possibly world changing idea. the gang at No Sweat is going to be pulling for you.
Great idea!
I am a fan of the 1 SECOND FILM. The first time I heard of this project I new it would be big. and here we are in the home strech. Good luck crew and keep up the hard work. Art inspires life.
I love it!!!! Brilliant!!!
As we move from the information age into the conceptual age, ideas like the collaboration foundation become even more vital. Relationship and harnessing the complex interplay of ideas and actions stemming from collaboration is one of the most inspiring and effective models for societal change and participatory democracy. Nirvan is a tireless visionary and his work is always two steps ahead of the game. I urge folks to delve deeper into the potential of the collaboration foundation and really take the time to mull over the implications of the scale of Nirvan's dream. Awe inspiring, metamorphic, empowering and revolutionary, I sincerely hope that the capitalist model proves worthy of funding such an inspired project.
Unless you're Stan Brakhage, any film is a collaborative work of art. Yet, there are still barriers to entry - you have to know somebody who knows somebody, you have to be willing to be exploited in Los Angeles, you can't drum up casual interest without a "big name", etc. etc. etc. What's really exciting about The 1 Second Film, and the other works proposed by the Collaboration Foundation, is that there are no such barriers. They are truly open to anyone - whether you want to paint a frame of animation with condiments, help dissect and reconstruct a school bus, or just give a dollar from half a world away. And best of all, this collaboration yields no personal gain - no feathers in caps, no money in pockets. Once the piece is created, all resources it generates will benefit non…more-profit organizations, and thus, the world at large.
The Collaboration Foundation is an amazing vision. I love how it unfolds and the ripples it aims to create throughout the world. I voted!
@ huyuno: thanks for the support! you can participate/learn more by visiting our work in progress, www.the1secondfilm.com. good luck with your project, and let us know when you get your site up. :)
I too, am a producer of the One Second Film - It is a great project, and ultimately done for a great cause.
I loved this idea from the first moment i saw it, i think everyone involved is doing an amazing job and I'm just happy that i can contribute in some small way. You really are inspiring a lot of people to follow wht they want!
I'd definitely be interested in learning more. Keep up the enthusiasm! Check out my idea when you have a chance, huyuno.com. Hopefully you'll be one of the site's first members! Cheers :)
Strong supporter all the way from Cambodia!!! Love the idea, please, join us and vote for the 1 second film!!!!!!
Great novel idea which seem to be working very well
this project is beautiful.
i love the idea of a global community creating art together, and using that as a platform for addressing social change. this is a great idea!
@ jspill: Thanks! Yes, Kiefer Sutherland is super nice! We met him at random and he really liked our project and donated on the spot. There is some video of it on his profile page: http://the1secondfilm.com/producer/6149
I ilke your site. Keifer Sutherland is familiar with you guys? Wow...he's one of my favorite actors. Shoot for the stars TCF

Wow! Thanks everyone that voted for our idea, and for all the encouraging comments! We made the front page of ideablob, so hopefully more people will stumble across our idea and support it with a vote. If anyone has any questions about The Collaboration Foundation, our 5 Phase Plan, or The 1 Second Film project, feel free to post them here. Thanks again!
Simply put... it's for a good cause... vote for it!
I think this will be an amazing way to bring people together!
I am a producer, since I think that it is a great project, which may show the future of making movies, which needs support and which deserves it.
inspired by their presentation at "the stove",inspired by their hope, creativity and intelligence, inspired to work locally for the art and people i love...and convinced we can all succeed.if i helped them by adding my producer credit, they helped me more by their very existence.the world has been waiting for you!
This is as original and world-changing as you're going to get. Keep on keeping on, Nirvan.
I found out about this project from one of my Yahoo groups and think it is terrific. As I heard today, the individual consciousness has grown and changed, which in turn changes the collective consciousness. The light bringers are here and the light is shining so brightly through this project. What has been in the dark cannot help but be turned towards the light and uplifted so that all may share in abundance, peace and prosperity.
1 second film is great! I am a producer and proud to be a part. Saw Evangenitals on their tour to collect money. What fun and talent. Good luck to all who join.
Love this one... Sooo cool! 52.52!
I am also interested in seeing the great people behind the 1secondfilm further their cause. This kind of global initiative is so wonderful for bringing people together, supporting art and helping the Global Fund for Women.
As a young artist living in LA i look forward to a day that art and artist will be as interconnected as many of the other aspects of our modern world are. Our strength is in our passion and commitment, and hopefully soon it will be in our combined numbers. I completely support this prodject and hope much success for its mission and the indiviuals who have dedicated themselves to this noble prodject. Good Luck!
I believe that this is a wonderfully innovative project and I wish them the best of luck!
Inspirational! 1secondfilm has been incredible to follow and is truly bringing people together!
Got my vote, totally. Very much support the 1secondfilm
The 1 Second Film is such a unique idea, and such a fantastic project on so many levels!
The 1secondfilm is an amazing, ambitious project. Good luck!
Tirelessly committed to bringing about positive change in the world, the 1 Second Film, Collaboration Foundation, and all those involved with them deserve not only votes but praise and hugs... I am all for it, keep up the good work (and I know there is a heck of a lot of it)!
The overall vision for this project is so huge, it's hard to grasp at first. When the realization of what can be accomplished with this type of collaboration comes upon you, it's truly inspiring.
This is exactly the kind of collaborative project and thinking we need to see grow right now. It's such a creative idea and uses technology to build community. The Collaboration Foundation has also shown itself to be a good investment by mobilizing such widespread individual support through its producer network. I want to see it grow more!
I'm a part of the project also, and appreciate teh opportunity to be a part of global collaborative art. As art budgets are cut in the education system, a participatory project like this helps open up the arts to the public. Great job!
I think the 1 Second Film has a real shot at effecting positive change because of its highly creative and "buzz worthy" nature. Would love to see this project expand to reach a national audience. Keep up the good work!
the project is an innovative as it is important to change. I believe in its eventual long tail and collaborative effect . As encouraging as the project and its mission is, it saddens me how arduous tthe task is to promote savvy, meaningful projects like this My best wishes for a quick tipping point.
Pretty much the coolest idea in the land!
I support the cause!!
Love this idea!
Great idea.
Nirvan is f'in rad. You've got to vote for these guys!
Vote for The One Second Film! While you're at it, donate to them also. Not only will you be a part of history, but you will also help the Global Fund for Women.
Entrepreneurship like this for a great cause needs encouragement...keep up the good work!
As a producer, I am so proud to be a part of this project. To see all of the progress made in such a short amount of time inspires me, as a filmmaker and photographer, to finish my own projects. Best of luck 1 Second Film!! I hope you win!
I am also a producer that at first was curious where this was all going and then all of a sudden as I saw more and more working together I realized that this is a project that is a statement to all of those that did not understand when Times declared YOU the person of the year. This just shows you that even during the writers strike, that there are people out there working together on one common goal to help repair the world using there skills and talents. The 10,000 would be very deserving for all the hard work that this project is trying to do.
I am a producer on the first phase project of the Collaboration Foundation's One Second Film. I'm impressed by the way this project inspires people and the way it has been managed with a strong value on transparency and inclusiveness. The other day I watch the recorded live meeting of other collaborators on the project and felt really good about the way decisions were being handled. I hope the Collaboration Foundation wins some extra financial support to help shepherd more development.
