Idea Description
A facebook application that connects NGOs/Charities to potential volunteers in their local area. The application would enable Individuals/Groups to search for events in their local area that meet their criteria. Individuals/Groups can posts their time, skills and commitment level and have NGO/Charities to create an event around them. Conversely, Groups can post their events and call for volunteers.
Events can be rated & ranked based on volunteer satisfaction & community impact.
A widely useful tool for non-committal volunteers, municipalities and NGO's/Charities working on small budgets. Reduces NGO operating cost for community volunteer coordinators & promotes well run organisations
What will you do if you win $10,000 for this idea?
Partner with an existing volunteer organisation (EWB.ca, Volunteer.com, Goodwork.ca) to lobby Facebook to co-develop & promote this socially beneficial application. In absence of support, partner with a University/Private Business to co-fund & brand the project.
Beta test in 1 City, by building a comprehensive database of local events in advance to the launch. 3-6 month beta test period limited to residents of the local area only (Beta Market: London or Toronto based upon highest number of facebook users).
Estimated development cost 10-50K, beta test 10-20K. Forward cost to be paid via donations by Volunteers & Organisations using the application.

I wish i had this when i was in college!
this would be a great idea, one i would definitely use. i just did habitat for humanity recently and they could use some more volunteers. check out my idea - maybe you could be one of our first users! cheers!!!
