Seeding Labs: environmentally responsible assistance for global science and health
Idea Description
Seeding Labs aims to transform the global map of scientific innovation hubs. By refurbishing laboratory equipment from universities and biotechnology companies in the United States, we equip talented scientists working in the developing world and reduce the environmental burden in the U.S. We believe that talent is everywhere, and that scientific research is the key to improvements in education, healthcare, environmental stewardship and a thriving modern economy. Our goal is to help our colleagues pursue the issues that matter most to them, at the same time connecting scientific communities across international borders. Visit us at www.seedinglabs.org.
What will you do if you win $10,000 for this idea?
With this $10,000 we will be able to work with a larger number of universities and the biotech community to collect equipment worth over $400,000. That's a return on investment!
The prize will help us ship this equipment to recipients like the students at the new UPC medical school in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (where there are only 4000 doctors for a country 4 times the size of Texas!) Without modern scientific equipment to train on, students like these would graduate with only a theoretical knowledge of science and medicine.

What advice do you have to help me grow my idea?

You like it. You’re confused by it. You want to know more. Ask questions and post comments here.

What a great idea ... this is very exciting.
This is an awesome idea - all the best with your work!
suziart - thanks for your comment - we can't seem to get ahold of you through this site but please write to info@seedinglabs.org. we would be happy to talk to you.
This is brilliant!
Sounds like a great idea!! I'm down for anything that improves education through hands on learning!!

Seems like a great way to use all those things that labs ordered and then did not really need
The idea that actually works and help people around the globe. They got my vote.
I am comfortable with this idea as it is obviously one of the most needed contributions to helping our entire planet. If you need an artist illustrator who does digital illustrations to help promote part of your developing program please check me out. I currently have interesting work on an Internet website and I can be found through Advanta, if it is not protocol to post my website here. I'd love to work up some posters for you. Thanks for your idea and research in a very positive direction, Suziart
I helped pack inventory for Seeding Labs last weekend and this is the real deal. It actually makes a difference and is very feasible. Great going!
It is amazing how such a simple idea gave benifit so many people while at the same time minimizing our footprint on the plant! It is this kind of ingenuity that shows what we are capable of as humans!!!
It's timely and constructively positive.
Very necessary! Seeding Labs is doing work that expands possibilities in science and beyond science.
Humanitarian, sustainably green, simple, powerful. Gotta love it.
thanks
Great Idea. I have done something much simpler, sending used (but good shape) shoes to remote areas of Brazil. Most of the time, it is their first pair of shoes. Simple, good for everyone, easy to get the shoes (tons donated), but the shipping is always the issue. Neither government is the least bit helpful! The US shipping rates now require full containers only, and Brazil sometimes holds it up in customs. If you or anyone else has any ideas on how to ship reasonably let us both know!
This is the kind of idea where you hear yourself saying "Of course," yet no-one has thought of it. Really ingenious of you. I wish you all the best in the race. From a supporter for the developing world, natalie.
very good idea
Hi, I think this is a great idea. I have voted for you earlier so can't vote again but I do think you have a great idea. Now that I am done being obsessed with the final 8 contest for Feb, :) I can relax and start supporting other great ideas. Best of luck to you. Regards, Erin
Great idea. Saving resources while helping those in need is just wonderful.
Great idea. I'd recommend looking into potential relationships you could develop for sources and lead generation. A couple of potentials might include: 1. Bio-tech & Pharmaceutical institutions who currently operate or plan to operate in the developing world. 2. Research facilities that are currently involved in pro bono or humanitarian studies. 3. Lab equipment manufacturers who might see refurbishing old equipment as a minor investment worthwhile to perform coupled with the tax write off. Good luck with this. Cheers.
Good luck with this, Im glad I was introduced to the site
I'd definitely be interested in learning more. Keep up the enthusiasm! Check out my idea when you have a chance, huyuno.com. Hopefully you'll be one of the site's first members! Cheers :)
there are so many "great" ideas out there; but this one stands out for the many reasons mentioned before my posting.
Terrific idea
i think this is great - i wonder how you would be able to partner with organizations like freecycle.org to help coordinate something like this. freecycle is all volunteer run, and moderated online. definitely a great model to look at.
"With $10,000 we could collect and distribute equipment worth over $400,000" there's investment. =)
its all about sustainability - i love it! great idea! Check out my idea when you have the chance...I'd like you to be one of my site's first users! Cheers!!!
environmental, social, amazing!
seeding lab is a simple idea but it will have huge impacts if all of us can help!! thanks for the organizer!
This is fantastic!
Seeding Labs is such a simple idea...simple genius!
There are rooms full of useable equipment at many academic, industry and government laboratories that are just sitting around collecting dust. Millions of dollars in equipment being wasted because a newer model has replaced the older version and the labs don't have space to use both. Seeding labs sounds like a wonderful way to start to manage all this waste and put it to good use. Great idea!
what a great idea - shmeens is a genius!
Sounds like a wonderful idea!
This is a really good idea - one scientist's trash is another scientist's treasure!
