Idea Description

RSA was incorporated in July, 2006. In northeastern Oklahoma, most of the small minority producers are elderly and/or retied people who supplement limited incomes from retirement and/or Social Security; supplement household income from other sources; and, who diversify their income in multiple farm products. The major problem is the lack of essential information to improve decision making to lead directly to increased abilities to develop sustainable agricuture practices; promote stewardship of the land; diversify production; and expand market opportunities. This model can be applied in any rural area with small producers.

What will you do if you win $10,000 for this idea?

(1) Conduct a specialized market survey to identify markets for existing animals and/or products of members; (2) conduct a series of workshops and field days that will lead to increased education and awareness of members on small producer marketing and introduce the RSA to area and regional market potentials; and, (3) expand internet site offerings for expanded marketing. This information and capacities, together with multiple marketing strategies, will lead directly to the sustainability of rural small farms. (see: www.ruralsmallholder.org. This funding will build on continuing activities of members.
